I think Zimmerman opened himself up to a world of trouble when the 911 dispatcher told him to lay off and he continued to follow the kid.
While we are speculating, what if he had just stayed within sight distance until the police had arrived. Chances are they would have checked both parties out and sent them both on their merry ways. That's not what happened though, so now we have to determine what actually took place as best we can and go from there. IMO that doesn't include offering rewards for the guy "Dead or Alive".
