You wouldn't sell your trade to receive better compensation, but you would sell your card collection for far more than it is actually worth, to some poor collector.

Everyone is a Prostitute, some just charge more than others for their services.

The baseball card comment was somewhat tongue in cheek. Nevertheless there is a difference. The collection has sentimental value to me that is above it's market value, but for the right price I can sacrifice sentimental value. There are other values that are more dear to me than sentimental value.

For some being a prostitute (in the sexual sense) might not be a values conflict at all. They have no moral inhibition against what they do. (How many times has the hooker with a heart of gold shown up as a character in a movie.) For other reasons, most places (but not all) have seen fit to make the practice illegal. I wouldn't engage in such, but I can't stand in judgment of those who do. Given the opportunity, I would prosecute those who exploit others in that way, however (i.e. pimps).

I have values conflicts with what goes on in advertising. Others don't. Feeling the way I do, I would be prostituting myself to engage in advertising for a living, but that is not the case for everyone else who is drawn to that work (although it probably is for some).

The last quote from Rob sums it up well - to thine own self be true.
