People can serve with distinction in the service and still become something other than the distinguished veteran they once were.
For example, Timoth McVeigh and John Allen Mohammed (DC Sniper) were both service veterans who were honorably discharged (no comparison to McCain intended or implied). For that matter, Charlie Rangel was a war hero. That doesn't render his later shady dealings beyond reproach IMHO.
