I flew there for 2 weeks in ~1984 from Munich when I lived nearby in Augsburg. I stayed for a week on the beach about 1/2 hour south of Mombasa and then spent a week in 3 game parks taking pictures of critters. At the beach, we went deep sea fishing several times and did lots of snorkeling on the coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.
The game parks were amazing, particularly the Masai Mara (the northern tip of the Serengeti). For example, we saw ~60 lions in our first afternoon and countless numbers of hoofed game. I'm glad I did it then. The dollar was strong and the whole trip including flights, ground transportation, lodging, food, safari guides, and all ancillary stuff was ~$900.
I picked up some awesome ebony wood carvings there and a bunch of very cool batiks. Maybe I'll snap a picture of my favorite carving and post it.
