What’s making some countries daydream about nukes again?

Today, nine nations possess nuclear weapons, a fraction of the several dozen that are technically advanced enough to build them. In the worst case, the number of states with nuclear weapons could more than double in the next two decades.

Seeing two countries that have nuclear weapons — Israel and the U.S. — attack Iran, a country that does not, is likely to create even greater interest among some vulnerable states to consider pursuing their own nuclear programs. The growing military ambitions of Russia and China, plus the uncertainty surrounding America’s commitments to its allies, all add up to a potential surge of new nuclear-armed countries.
