I think it is absolutely ridiculous that in the US some servers basically work for free for their "employer", and rely on the customer tipping to make money.

Having lived in Germany for over a decade, I much prefer the system there where the server does not even expect a tip beyond maybe rounding it up to the next Euro. One might think that our system whereby the server is dependent on tips would result in better service than in Germany. It simply isn't so. Service staff in Germany are far more competent and professional than they are are.
Since COVID and the proliferation of handheld terminals that put a suggested 20% tip on nearly everything you buy from a cup of coffee to a beer, it's really gotten out of hand here.
