It goes back to the Middle Ages when Jews were prohibited from joining guilds and working in most trades. Accordingly, the non-peasant class of Jews worked in money, banking and accounting for which they showed talent. Ironically, it was anti-Semitism that drove them into the very career fields that later resulted in these subsequent myths of control and the accompanying anti-Semitism
