I'm pretty sure it was a mine that got them. As soon as he drove into that "road" it blew.
Rus tanks have a quirky system of storing their ammo in a rack in the turret. They cook off in a spectacular fashion. The M1Abrahms store their ammo in an armored locker separate from the crew.
