A quality AR15 bought at Walmart (or from any of the ~50,000 FFL's in this country) is most assuredly a better infantryman's weapon than a Garand for all the reasons I stated in my post above. Your nostalgia may say otherwise, but facts don't.

Also, the M14 (upon which your M1A1 is based) did not enter service until 13 years after Iwo Jima (and ~20 years after the Garand did) and is unquestionably a better weapon than the Garand to which I originally referred. It is still in limited service today (unlike the Garand).

I'll stick with my original assertion. A quality AR-15 is a better infantry weapon than the Garand that the Marine rifleman brought ashore at Iwo Jima.
