Conscientious individuals who engage in civil disobedience are prepared to face the consequences, including arrest. This is so, even if the law is unjust. Generally, I don't see laws against vandalism as unjust.

If they so choose, these painters can have their day in court to make whatever arguments they want about the alleged injustice of the charges against them. Maybe they will want to tell the story about how they were beaten and cursed when they were charged - but wait - that didn't happen.
