not-automatic: you at least have to manually work the mechanism to load a new round after one shot, and cock the hammer so it will fire when the trigger is pulled.
semi-automatic: after a shot, a new round is chambered and the hammer is cocked automatically. All you have to do to fire again is pull the trigger again.
automatic: chambering, cocking, and firing all happen automatically and repeatedly as long as the trigger is held down.
machine-gun: an automatic weapon.
