The estimated cost to run a Nimitz class carrier strike group is a bit over $2.5 million/day...a bit under $1 billion/year. That's $11 billion/year for our carrier force, plus whatever the expenses are to keep the other 9 commissioned aircraft carriers battle ready 365 days a year. But that's peanuts as a strike group built around a new Gerald R. Ford class carrier has been estimated to cost as much as $7 million/day...$2.5 billion/year. And the Pentagon, of course would like to have all the old Nimitz class flat tops, replaced with Ford class.
