Here's some interesting stuff.
In 2008 Obama got 69.5 million votes.
In 2012 Obama got 65.9 million votes
In 2016 Hillary Clinton so far has 60.3 million votes. A few more will dribble in as provisional ballots are added but you can see what the bottom line is going to be.
In 2012 Mitt Romney got 60.9 million votes.
So far Trump has 59.9 million votes.
So it appears that Trump is going to win win less votes than Romney had when he lost.
In fact both candidates are going to underperform Mitt Romney.
Presumably as the population is growing one would expect the vote counts to be getting higher each election.
But they are not.
Here's another way to look at it.
Republicans:
2008 McCain": 59.9 million votes
2012 Romney: 60.9 million votes
2016 Trump: 59.9 million votes
Pretty consistant
Democrats
2008 Obama: 69.5 million votes
2012 Obama: 65.9 million votes
2016 Clinton: 60.3 million votes
