Religion is a choice on whether to take someone's word on the unprovable on faith or not.
I don't have that kind of faith, and find the emotional investment optional. Whether there's a cosmic penalty for that is also a matter of faith. It's comforting to think there's some sort of cosmic payback for being an asshole in life, but the data is absent.
