What we saw was pandering to every minority group under the sun and it's just modern day politics since it seems every minority group perceives that they are being left out. All this is talk anyway and eventually the lobbyists (minority groups with money) get their way anyway. Conventions are one big bore and a major marketing campaign and mostly boring.
