As it is being an independent is just a way of being a weak Republican or a weak Democrat since they tend to align themselves with either one eventually. Plus the dissolution of power disables a powerful majority in Congress and split-ticket voting which leads to what we have now.
Yeah someone will say there is an actual independent party but no not really.
One of the problems Sanders caused himself was not being a Democrat for all those years. No superdelegate one was going to switch from Hillary to him even if he got close enough to make them think about it. All the superdelegates are establishment Democrats.
