He was a local boy (a Marylander) and was the first
elected President of the Continental Congress
to serve a full one year term. Two guys preceded him as President of the Congress, Samuel Huntington and Thomas McKean. Huntington was the first President of Con. Congress as a holdover from the days prior to the enactment of the Articles of Confederation. McKean was elected, but didn't serve a full year term, stepping down after our victory at Yorktown. This position isn't exactly analogous to being President of the United States, BTW.

FWIW, the portion of US 50, the highway that leads from DC to Ocean City, MD, is called the John Hanson Highway.
