That's true.
Once you exhibit a weapon you have given your opponent the same in fear of your life defense as you have.
Unless, as you point out, he is in the process of committing a felony.
And not all felonies are equal. For one, you can't just shoot a common thief, even if he is committing a felony.
Personally, my advice to firearm owners is to keep that hogleg holstered unless you have no alternative but to use it. And 99 times out of 100, you're gonna be sorry you did.
Even justifiable homicide is still homicide. And the average person isn't going to adjust well to being a participant to such an endeavor.
