Ignorance Vs. Reason in the War on Education

I went to the doctor on Thursday, and picked up a Time magazine while in the waiting room. There was a good article on education by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Excellent. Since i was introduced to Kareem the commentator on this board, I've been very impressed.

Sounds good to me.

At least when it comes to Politics.

I have no desire to be around right wingers and exposed to their way of thinking. That's why I like this forum. It's dearth of right wingers. Right wing Political ideology is poison. It's like exposing yourself to the Ebola virus.

"I had to rely on experts."

That says it all. Great article.

I think the main message was that critical thinking is as important to learn as facts. I won't argue that GOP ideology is poison though.

I agree.

It was a good article overall.

I've just reached a point in my life where I don't want to hear any more right wing crap.

Great article. I especially liked this part of the last paragraph.
Quote:

The joy of college is arguing with others who are equally passionate and informed but disagree. It develops empathy for others and humility in yourself because you now will look upon your opponents not as evil idiots but as good people who want the same thing as you: a safe, loving, moral community. If you don’t want to read the books and develop the skills, don’t take the class. Don’t attend the college. Spend the rest of your life huddled among those who agree with you. But know that that is not thinking—it’s sleeping. Perhaps the Beatles said it best: “Please, don’t wake me, no, don’t shake me. Leave me where I am, I’m only sleeping.”
