Bolivia has reduced poverty and inequality more than any country in the Western Hemisphere over the last ten years by increasing the minimum wage 87%, doubling investment in schools and healthcare, and lowering the pension retirement age from 65 to 60. The government paid for these programs by increasing taxes on oil profits from 18% to 82%, which also allowed the country to eliminate its debt and amass the world's largest surplus. Bolivia is now estimated to have the region's fastest growing economy this year and next, according to the IMF.

broken link :(

As the natural resources of a country belong to all the people of that country, the bulk of proceeds from the sale of that resource should go to helping the people of that country....rather than one persons multi billions dollars pocketbook.

Wouldn't you agree?

This country would be in much better shape if capitalism wasn't siphoning off trillions every year from the nations natural resources.

That's where this country is going wrong.

The link was fine. The forum is broken. There's a word starting with so...followed by a series of letters that might be interpreted as a limp dick drug...thus any link with "soci@lism" in it becomes a bad link.

It's a good article though...google "the guardian bolivia economy" and it will be at the top of the list.

Time to get rid of this silly ass "ci************************lis" thing.

The international markets are what they are. The point is that Evo has done something that few leaders in the western hemisphere have taken the risk to do. He's attempted, with considerable success to structure an economic system considerably more fair to the working poor. And it's had a positive effect on the economy of Bolivia and poverty in Bolivia.

But let's take a dump on him anyway, eh pots?

Oh--that BS again. thanks for explanation. I actually had that problem with a link I really wanted to post once. Had to use 'tinyurl' to make an alternate link.

Mr. Pots post was in support, not a dump.

MrPots 10-17-2014 08:43 AM

Yes, thank you nailer.

piece-itpete 10-17-2014 09:20 AM

Congrats to them, really, but comparing us to Bolivia is kinda stretching it just a teenie tad?

Pete

BlueStreak 10-18-2014 12:29 AM

No. It's not a stretch at all. The only difference is scale.

The more billions, or "trillions" I guess, that get pigged up into the offshore accounts of a handful of individuals, the less there is to go around. Unfortunately, here in the USA we have not only codified such pointless behavior, we encourage it and admire the pigs who do it. Some of us even wanted to elect one to the Whitehouse, believe it or not.

Give them more tax cuts or wage "flexibility", Pete, and all you're doing is giving them more money to squirrel away. They no longer give a shit about us, because we told them not to and some of us even admire their selfish greed. Sadly, I fear we have become a very stupid, self defeating society.

Dave
