New National Monument In my Backyard

http://www.latimes.com/science/la-me...011-story.html

"President Obama on Friday officially set aside 346,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument, a move to link more communities east of Los Angeles with wild places in their own backyards.
"This is an issue of social justice, because it's not enough to have this awesome natural wonder within your sight — you have to be able to access it," Obama said at a ceremony attended by more than 150 people at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas.
"Right now, campgrounds are crowded, parking lots are tight, and there haven't been enough resources to manage and maintain this area the way it deserves," he said. "So designating the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument is just the first step toward a broader effort to change that." LATimes

:)A very large chunk the Angeles National Forest is now a national monument. The San Gabriel River has been a longtime getaway us here in SoCal and now it'll see better protection and funding. The trash and parking problems have become so out of hand as to be overwhelming.:(

Thanks Mr. President and a nod to Teddy Roosevelt for empowering this decision.

That's disgusting.

Put them through an industrial woodchipper and use them for fish chum.

I keep forgetting that not everyone read Zap Comix back in the day.;)

Oblique and obscure reference to 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Bros' where Fat Freddy gets himself a shotgun to live off the land and promptly discharges his weapon into the ceiling of his apartment and kills a rat in the attic. His brother Freewheelin' Franklin tells him, 'you killed it, you eat it'.

Oh well...:o

I recall the Freak Bros. well, but missed more issues than I ever saw. Still, your saying worked even if one doesn't know the classical literary source....

My clearest memories are of Fat Freddy's Cat and that Douglas MacArthur roach.
