In the early days of China opening to west she needed Hong Kong to interact with capitalism.

Now Hong Kong is still important but not to that degree where she has to defer to their democratic desires.

Hong Kong is viewed as a bad example to the main land.

And they will send in the army if the protesters make too much fuss.

I suppose the Islanders consider the Mainland PRC a bad example for the world, the present betrayal another exhibit of it.
