Right. What could be more "elitist" and authoritarian than an unquestionable "God" and his legions of unquestioning "followers"?

You don't elect Gods. You "tremble" before them and dutifully do as you're told.

Religion and politics (government) joined together is a HUGE mistake.

That it is. The combination of earthly power and heavenly mandate tends toward tyrannical negation of individual rights, and religious war.
