Video Game

Not Lana Del Ray but another high octane video game; Grand Theft Auto. Made in Scotland. Highly violent and going by the accents and "Gansta Rap", set in a mythical city in the U.S. of A.

Does anyone reckon it encourages street violence, or has it no effect; players knowing it's make believe.

I believe kids who are exposed for a long time to this crap become
hardened, are more readily to tolerate brutality.

piece-itpete 09-18-2013 02:33 PM

Agreed! We desensitize children to violence very early here.

Personally, I think the connection is bullshit. How about war re-enactments?

BlueStreak 09-18-2013 04:32 PM

I don't. I think it very well could have an effect to some degree. War movies and even re-enactments are not interactive. The actors realize they are acting and the public is passively observing. It may not make every end user a raging lunatic, but, I can see where it could foster a subtle desensitization.

I dunno, Dave. The Japanese have some pretty gruesome video games and their kids play a lot more than anyone. They aren't out there playing shoot 'em up for real. It's a common theme in right wing diatribes about how Hollyweird is to blame and first person shooter games are what is desensitizing kids. Meh, I smell deflection of the NRA sort.

Hell, I've spent far too many hours shooting down Nazis and Japanese planes in MS Combat Flight Simulator and it hasn't turned me into a bloodthirsty killer.

Mebbe if I got my hands on a real P38 or P51 I would snap but I doubt it though.

I think the media is more apt to be desensitizing than video games. Most people, even kids realize a game is a game. The news shows real events, and they are rarely positive.

Bullshit

Japan has way violent games and Manga comics. You can probably count gun homicides on one hand. Where do you think Tarantino gets all of his violent movie ideas?

cop out of the highest order.

Yup

Japanese video games are played more and are far more violent but yet look at the murder stats and gun violence stats.

Huge cop out for the gun industry to try and take heat off them. They just hope folks "in the know" don't get the truth out, like most things.

I'm pretty sure pete and a few others have cracked open a little tome known as "the Bible". Shit, God himself told folks to commit genocide but not to stop at that, to kill all the livestock and salt the fields......

Appropriate gun control at work.
