History lesson time who said this and when did they say it.

"The gulf between employers and the employed is constantly widening, and classes are rapidly forming, one comprising the very rich and powerful, while in another are found the toiling poor," announced (censored)."

"Corporations, which should be the carefully restrained creatures of the law and the servants of the people, are fast becoming the people's masters".

I know who it was and when it was. But, I cheated, so I'll refrain from telling.

BTW, the article I pulled up was incredibly interesting. It would appear that I am right; We've done all of this before, it DIDN'T work for anyone but a tiny handfull of the very wealthy and powerful, and ultimately the people rebelled.

So, why must we do it again?

Yep, me too. I figured Bob would let the cat out of the bag.

Grover Cleveland it was, in his 1888 State of the Union Address;

http://www.onlinesentinel.com/opinio...e&id=3&start=1

Lengthy address, which also demostrates that Clinton wasn't the first long winded President.:p

But, it contains many an interesting element, that show Cleveland was a broad thinker and a pragmatist. He speaks out against too much government but, also appears to acknowledge that letting corporate (private sector) power grow out of control, corrupting government, is just as big a mistake.

Privately owned, corporate power should NEVER be allowed to exceed that of our elected representatives. EVER. Corporations are notoriously authoritarian, oligarchical and undemocratic. Note that he mentions the evil of communism. There is a reason why the two are juxtaposed within this one speech. Corporatism and Communism may be somewhat different in operating principle, but are not so different in practice;

Both subjugate the individual to the will of the oligarchy.

Thank the Roberts court and the corrupt ideology of modern conservatism* for the future I fear we are about to realize.

Dave

(*As opposed to the Republican conservatism of men such as Cleveland and T. Roosevelt.)

People did not pay attention in school and college when taking American History classes. That and the fact that people whose lives were improved by such things as Progressivism, the New Deal and the Great Society are dying off. Today's generation of younger citizens are without a clue as to why are country is so great. Of course when you think of all the Baby Boomers on Medicare and Social Security (early boomers are eligible) who are Tea Party members one has to say maybe my hypothesis is not correct. Hey Tea Party boomers give up your Medicare...yeah right.

When I think of the young people who support Ron Paul you get the idea that these citizens do not realize that they are trying to take away their future safety net by listening to some hypocritical Congressman who has been a government employees for years talk about "small government". Pied Piper indeed. He must not be much of a doctor if thinks some one without health insurance should just be left on the side of the road.
