Sharpton represents a segment of the socieity in the same way, say, Rick Warren represents a segment of socieity. I don't think either would claim any authority, but I think both would say they are able to articulate how a group of people feel about a given issue.

My grandma used to say...the devil NEVER takes a vacation. :)
