When I got my first mental health job as a direct service provider at a not for profit agency in 1993, I found out quickly what the deal is with the American people. I worked on cases that involved the Illinois Department of Children and Families. Child protective services cases. I don't know what it's like now, but back in those days Illinois DCFS workers in metro Chicago were overloaded with so many cases that there was no way they could keep every at risk kid safe. And they were paid shit for it. It was the first time I thought about how we have Jobs, and Gates, and Oprah, and Ellen, and Stallone and Buffett, etc., who get rewarded the way they do at the same time that kids who are supposed to be protected and are being abused and killed.
And that the culture has decided what it wants to reward and with how much...and the culture gets exactly what it deserves.
