Farewell to the Washington Deadskins
"The Washington Redskins moved Friday toward what team owner Daniel Snyder once vowed was unthinkable: changing their controversial name in a bow to pressure from their largest corporate sponsors and the fierce winds of societal reckoning sweeping the country.
After years of resistance, the team said it was launching a thorough review of the name. It did not share any details of the process, but two people familiar with discussions among Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and league officials that led to Friday’s announcement said the review is expected to result in a new team name and mascot. “You know where this leads,” one of the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “They’re working on that process [of changing the name]. It will end with a new name. Dan has been listening to different people over the last number of weeks.”" WP https://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...ial-team-name/ 'Bout damned time, Snyder. |

Actually, I was up at 4:30, just like every weekday morning, going to go chase the weasel.

This comes up every few years. If enough sponsors balk, they'll change it - assuming other advertisers don't fill the void.

But at the end of the day, the perception is the same. The new word(s) just means the same thing as the old words and carries the same cultural connotations. Instead of messing with labels, one should address real problems and solutions. Ask the black family behind the Aunt Jemima brand how they feel about the change. ;) |
Indeed.

Keep in mind that getting rid of Aunt Jemima was hardly the first priority of BLM. It was Quaker Oat's idea of a good PR move right now. If you're all broken up about it, your beef is with the corporate types.
Sure it's just symbolism, but it's good symbolism, this imaging of darkies as happy servants is unfortunate and way out of date. BLM wants more concrete things. Like, in Columbus Ohio it's come out that the rate of police killings per population is highest in the nation. here's what is demanded there. Note no rebranding on the list: Quote:

Pfft.
Native Americans actually like the homage the NFL pays to them with the names and mascots. It's a tribute to their fighting heritage. Seriously. I can post numerous interviews to back this claim up. But the 'political correctness cause' over rules what they think. Apparently. |
