A factoid......

Unemployment does not kick in right away. I was laid off on February 16, according to NY state, I will not receive benefits until March 10.

Bah :(

Soc Sec works the same way, like pay periods at work too. You get paid for a period at the end of the period.

I think Bush instituted all the waiting periods.

merrylander 02-27-2010 12:27 PM

I think it is pretty much the same the world over, kind of like the normal salary, you only get it after the fact.

Grumpy 02-27-2010 08:50 PM

iirc it was a couple of weeks here in Michigan. Least till they run out of money. Wait they did.

I think they're all broke. And they're fixing to raise my unemployment rates since I'm still in business. That's gonna help jump start the economy.

Like I've said before, if you have anything, they're coming for it. Can't get blood out of a turnip.

Guess they didn't lower taxes enough.

You can thank that ignoranus Banning for that, he has a hold on the extension bill.

Why in the world one man, who holds so many livelihoods in his hands, would do that is beyond me. He clearly should not hold the position of power he does.

merrylander 02-28-2010 08:22 AM

Even worse, why do the Senate rules allow this? They call this a democratic republic - yeah sure.

Bunning is nuts, literally. It's common knowledge. The real question is why do the people of Kentucky continue to elect him?

I think he's on his way out.

Got a letter from the NY department of labor yesterday. It said that I have to go to a jobs thing on Wednesday of this week. I've spent this week doing up a resume that now looks really good, and I sent it to a couple potential employers.

So all taken into account, I'm trying to ascertain my own direction. Since I have to ration what's left of the cash I have in the bank, I can't really go anywhere, although I really think that I need to, as after the last two weeks of being housebound with the exception of filling out papers, worrying about my kids' medical coverage (now taken care of through my ex), and doing some long overdue work on the house, I'm feeling drained. Every day it seems that I get more and more tired, and it's getting harder and harder just to drag myself out of bed on a decent schedule.

I know I just have to be patient until the next opportunity presents itself, but I have to admit, I'm a bit scared for my own future.......

Whatever you do, just be sure you DO drag yourself out of bed every morning and do something. Best way to fight depression is to do some work.

Good luck,

Chas

Beware of the dreaded "Depression Monster" It is real and no joke. Know your real enemy.

d-ray657 02-28-2010 07:59 PM

The time I spent unemployed I felt the same way. It seemed like looking for work was the hardest work there was. It can get hard to deal with rejection. Have faith that the period will end and it can be a positive change. You know folks here are pulling for you.

D-Ray

If you want to talk to someone who has lifetime experience with depression/anxiety, I'm here for ya, PM me. Thankfully, I have yet to be in your employment situation and I can only imagine the pressure your under, but you're not alone. I'm sure you have plenty of people around you who can offer emotional support. Most of the time it helps alot just to have someone nonjudgemental that you can talk too.

Hang in there, Bud. Hard times don't last forever.

Dave

merrylander 03-01-2010 06:55 AM

Chas and JJ give good advice Tim, you must not let that monster set your agenda.

Charles 03-01-2010 08:15 AM

As someone who has always been prone to getting down in the mouth, a couple of ideas.

Listen to what you're telling yourself. If you catch yourself thinking about how bad the situation is, change your train of thought. Controlling your mind is half of the battle, if not the whole battle.

Remember, if business is off 40%, 60% is still out there. Concentrate on the 60%.

Go out every day and apply for five jobs. Apply for any job that you can bear. If you get a chance to make 20 bucks, take it. If you're out there trying to help yourself, you'll be amazed at the people who will help you to do it.

I know it's lame, but read "The Power of Positive Thinking". It will help you get your mind right.

Just some thoughts,

Chas

BlueStreak 03-03-2010 10:37 AM

Chas is right, keeping busy, and staying positive the most important things. It never helps to sit and stew. Never. As I've said, I've never been on unemployment, but I have taken work beneath my skills, just to keep busy and keep some bills paid until something better popped up.

Anyhow, I hope something breaks for ya soon, Tim.
Keep us posted.

Dave

Some good news, that ignoranus Bunning finally withdrew his objection.

There is always a waiting period. The idea is to incentivize a person to get back to work quickly, not encourage them to go on welfare.

Most states also have a longer waiting period if the applicant has voluntarily quit or been fired for cause.
