Larry Wilmore had a nice riff on this on last night's The Nightly Show.

Yeh well...it's still Alabama. And if you get on the wrong side of Fester and Bubba, you still end up chained to the Silverado and drug down the road till your body falls apart.

Alabama's chief justice defies federal court.

Rajoo 02-09-2015 12:56 PM

There are some third world countries and we have some third world states. Few counties are still denying licenses.

The Chief Justice, Roy Moore, is a serious wing nut with presidential aspirations. Taking positions against things like same sex marriage and against the separation of Church and State are red meat for the southern Republican base.

Huckabee reminds us this morning that the president was against it.

And the surface of the sun is a tad warm.

Well, it's Today and it's here. There were pro-s/s-marriage demonstraters at the county offices where I re-registered my vehicles today and I gave them a thumbsup and had a chat with them before going in. Coming out and getting ready to drive off I was approached by a reporter and interviewed for the Anniston Star local paper, owned by a renowned local family of Progressives. There was also a smaller group of protesters formed while I was inside.
Myself and my partner of 25 years will have to decide if this is overall advantageous for us, now or later, probably in conjunction with good sympathetic legal advice.

Might be worth waiting to see what the Supremes do. If they uphold the constitutionality marriage equality, states like Alabama aren't going to have a lot of options.

Looks like the last dying gasp for these folk, the writing is on the wall.

"The Supreme Court on Monday gave its strongest signal yet that advocates seeking the legalization of gay marriage nationwide have won even before April's arguments.
The justices, with only two dissents, turned down a plea to delay same-sex marriages in Alabama by the state’s attorney general. The court's action clears the way, for the first time in the Deep South, for gay couples to seek marriage licenses. A federal judge in Alabama had struck down the state’s law limiting marriage to a man and a woman.
Normally, a state might have expected the high court to block the judge’s decision from taking effect, given that the justices had agreed to rule by June on whether gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry."

"But rather than wait for the outcome, the justices instead told Alabama state officials they must now issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
“This is further confirmation that the result in the marriage cases is a foregone conclusion,” said Cornell University law professor Michael Dorf."

"In an unusual move, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a dissent that all but admitted defeat. He said the court should have agreed to “preserve the status quo pending the court’s resolution of the constitutional question.”

I expect poligamy between responsible consenting adults will eventually if not soon follow as its prohibition another unjustifiable intrusion into citizens' private lives. A matter of especial interest out Westward from whence I came.

That'll make for some interesting legal wrangling I expect, both going into it and out of it.

What the hell, lawyers need to eat too. (grin)

bobabode 02-09-2015 09:29 PM

That's 37 states now, in case anyone is still counting, 13 to go.

Michigan is next...:D

Alabama Officials Defy Federal Ruling Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

https://gma.yahoo.com/most-alabama-c...opstories.html

Quote:

At least 51 of 67 Alabama counties were not issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples today in defiance of a federal ruling to do so, according to an ABC News count.

Among the Alabamans affected today were Joe Baker and Russell Wilson, who said their excitement turned to disappointment as they headed to the Mobile, Alabama, courthouse to get a marriage license and found the office window closed.

"We thought the windows were going to open at 8 [a.m.]," Baker said. "They just [kept] delaying it and delaying it."

Instead of signing marriage licenses, Baker and Wilson gathered with several other same-sex couples today in a law office to file new petitions.

"No windows open. No marriage license," Wilson said. "We waited 33 years for this. ... It's a big disappointment."

It was a chaotic day for same-sex couples as a U.S. Supreme Court decision made Alabama the 37th state today to allow same-sex marriages. On Sunday night, a state chief justice ordered county judges to deny the licenses and today Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley said he was "disappointed" in a federal appeals court's decision to allow the unions but would not take action against judges who issued licenses.
It's Déjà vu all over again.

Temple Square, definitely not Bluffdale or Pinesdale.
My brother and his colleague are literally writing the book on the history of this subject in three volumes, "The persistence of Polygamy".

I don't know where Willard will be standing, but Ann will be standing on Willard's throat. It's clearly how that marriage works. Willard wanted to take another run at it and Ann put her foot down right on his neck. So it appears that poly is out.

Sassenach.

Jumping the broom is a Gypsy tradition that somehow or other came to the African slave community here.

John

Pio1980 02-13-2015 11:10 AM

Now we're deciding where and whom to perform the ceremony. My pard's ex in Atlanta may do the honors as it would be proper to ask because of our ongoing close mutual friendship. I'd like to have a reception with our 'show people' social circle in B'ham.

I believe it somehow got to Scotland as well. On thing that happened on one of my lectures in the Netherlands. Hearing that Florence would be with me our hosts booked the bridal suite in the hotel. It was like two single beds pushed together but there was a board running down the center????
