Happy Veteran's Day from Salon.com

More evidence that the Left just doesn't get it.

I completely agree with their sentiment:

Put a man in uniform, preferably a white man, give him a gun, and Americans will worship him. It is a particularly childish trait, of a childlike culture, that insists on anointing all active military members and police officers as “heroes.” The rhetorical sloppiness and intellectual shallowness of affixing such a reverent label to everyone in the military or law enforcement betrays a frightening cultural streak of nationalism, chauvinism, authoritarianism and totalitarianism...

As opposed to being a liberal sentiment, I'd suggest it's a objective observation.

Sad that Veteran's Day in today's USA is now partisan. :(

Put tripe like that in a left - leading magazine on Veterans Day, and it becomes so. I also question the judgement of Salon to run that column on Veterans Day.

I'm not surprised.

You're not surprised that I don't consider every person who ever wore a uniform a hero? I'm equally not surprised by your hero worship of anyone in uniform.

FWIW, I spent the first 37 years of my life surrounded by the US Army as an Army brat and a Dep't of Army civilian, much of it overseas. I met lots of smart, hard-working, even heroic people. I also met some of the most ignorant low-lives ever. If you are of the opinion that they're all heroes, it just goes to show that you have exactly zero experience in and/or around the military.

Ike Bana 11-11-2014 03:14 PM

To my fellow vets hereabouts...happy vets day, scumbags. Anybody think they're a hero? PFFFFFffffftttt.......

I'd be very surprised if whelly spend a nano-second in uniform. None of us would have spewed out the chunks of his OP. Like he gets anything.

Whell is like a teenage girl (or a hooker hanging outside the front gate of Ft. Bragg). He gets all tingly at the sight of a man in uniform.

BlueStreak 11-11-2014 04:21 PM

On the Facebook flight deck veterans group today there was a discussion about restaurants that offer free meals to veterans on this day. It was good to see that most of the respondents appreciated the sentiment, but usually declined the free meal for various reasons; "I didn't join to get free meals.", "No thanks, I'd rather see it go to someone who needs it." etc., etc.........

Of course there were those who feel that, not only do they deserve it, but it's owed to them. "We protected their freedom, damn right they should show some gratitude!"............Those ones also tend to bitch about the president a lot. Make of that what you will.

That's right. It only took me four years to figure that out. I got my biggest lesson when I thought I was being a good sailor, following orders and trying to report fraud. I got told, in no uncertain terms, to shut up and mind my own business.

The notion that "They are all our heroes." is the smoke screen the worst scumbags hide behind. Elevating any group above reproach invites trouble.

Back at ya, Ike! A "hero"?, Meh. I was a kid who needed a job.

I believe Mike said he was a Marine. Is that correct, Mike?

There's this upscale supermarket that opened in town here last summer...The Fresh Market. It's 2.00/lb skinless chicken breast day every Tuesday and every Tuesday I go in and pick up 2-3. Anyway, at the checkout the woman was asking every guy if he's a vet. There were 2 of us in line...we got a 5 buck coupon on our next $20 purchase. I thought it was a nice gesture. After reading this I was thinking I'd go back there tomorrow and give it to somebody who looks like they could use it, but to be honest, I've never seen anybody who looks like they need a $5 coupon shopping at The Fresh Market, and you can probably get $35 worth of stuff at the Jewel for what costs you 20 bucks there...so I'm keeping it.

My comment was;

This memorial notes 580000 names of dead soldiers of WWI, inclusive German soldiers. I think many hardcore Republicans would risk a stroke if they would know that...

Yes - German soldiers were also victims - victims of the forced craziness that the "unbearable peace" has to end..

You may get something like a stroke over an SS memorial. This bunch--the worst you'd hear I think is a surly 'Shoulda been more.'

I wonder how many realize how many more there were. 580,000 isn't half of it.

WW1 wasn't neatly cut and dried for sure.

I understand Dave...it was just a little story about the ups and downs of shopping in an upscale neighborhood.

icenine 11-12-2014 12:11 PM

On a lighter note I got a free cup of coffee at Starbuck's yesterday. I may have crossed the line by asking for a venti but was told the free ones only came in the tall size. That was cool with me. I left a dollar tip.

It just kills me that people do not mind me paying only about $435 a year for full health insurance yet do not want to the government to pay theirs or they hate Obamacare.

I think your discrimination WWI - WWII in this context is important. I second that.

HELL NO.

Did my job, and stayed out of trouble.

The whole time I was in the service I never met a fellow serviceman that did anything that could be described as heroic.

To be a hero you gotta do something way way way out of the ordinary as far as I am concerned.

We had some VC sappers that snuck onto our base and blew up our ammo dump.

Now that took some balls.

They might have made the grade as Heroes.

C'mon whell...me and TJ are apparently fuckin' heroes. Get TF on here and give us both a big wet kiss.

Unless all that righteous vet love is only for teabagger former heroes.

I'm assuming it's VA. Many of us have abandoned the VA and happily pay our Medicare premium and supplement premiums, or our Medicare Advantage premiums so that we have some choice in our care. Too many friends and relatives in the VA end up having to take cases to the Patient Advocate's Office when the VA docs decide they won't take what would, in the real world of health care, be a preferred course of treatment or surgery.

Yeah, there have been plenty of times that I have cursed myself for getting out after 4, instead of staying for 20.

I'd assume it's an employeer plan, the kind made available to retired management, and (mostly in the past) to the rank and file of firms that valued their employees.

Make no mistake, the right is going after your Military Retirement benefits.

And Whelly and his ilk will be shilling for them.
