Retirement is awesome.

So far today I've checked to make sure my monthly pension check got direct deposited OK (it did), taken a morning walk, did a few bench presses, and changed a light bulb.

I think I'll take the rest of the day off.

piece-itpete 10-31-2014 10:24 AM

GAAAA! Just rub it in Tom :)

Pete

merrylander 10-31-2014 11:02 AM

That makes me think, I need to log in at RBC and see if Bell has deposited mine.

merrylander 10-31-2014 11:06 AM

Yep all there safe and sound.

icenine 10-31-2014 11:13 AM

My GS job is sort of like retirement.

I've had less productive days. So far I've got a box of tapes packed-up to send to a guy, and I expect to get the Baby Advents I refoamed put back together. And there's daily maintenance, I participate in cooking and washing and feeding the pets and stuff. Really, it's just one thing after another. Generally, considerably after.... :)

nailer 10-31-2014 11:29 AM

I put air in the tires and water in the wiper system.

Wait a sec, yup that was yesterday.

icenine 10-31-2014 11:35 AM

no more projects for me.

I am starting to just leave stuff at the thrifts.

Dondilion 10-31-2014 11:53 AM

Went to the park to exercise and chat politics with the early morning retirees.

Helped my daughter with her final year college calculus.

Checked with nearby second hand book seller. Lately I have been collecting
books in Spanish and have found some gems for a dollar each. :D

LPs and especially nice items for me, these days. The Advents had been sitting around here forever, finally getting them in shape to move on.

Did just snag a pair of Advent Legacies a couple weeks ago. Don't need 'em, but they were close to going to the dump. Couldn't have that.

merrylander 10-31-2014 01:40 PM

Did a couple of chores, got the battery out of the tractor cause it would freeze in the barn. Cleaned out a bird feeder, pumped a soft tire on said tractor and brought in the hummer feeders as they have gone south. Sure nice having the golf cart to run me up that big hill out back.

I have some Advent 1/s and did have a pair of Advent NLAs...

they just do not really do it for me. The best one I have heard is the Advent/3 that has an amazing mid-range...but the woofer blats too much when slightly over driven.

I think the Snells might be the best speakers I have at the moment.
The only thing I am looking for are some nice KLH Model Fives. I really need to do a speaker sell on CL.

donquixote99 10-31-2014 02:13 PM

Sterio Spreakers for Sell!

Advents are eclipsed, but they are well-remembered and people still like 'em. And they're a big step up from a lot of the crap out there....

It is readily sad to watch these seniors doing so many strenuous exercises.

I believe we are badly led on these exercises which in my opinion do more damage to joints than they help...and this excessive running!

Don't even need the exercise, when I tore the meniscus in my knee I was planting flower bulbs for pity's sake.

Let's see: I checked the email several times; made sure that the end of the month billing is in order; met with a client; called another; worked on drafting a summary judgment brief; reviewed a arbitration panel; reviewed a collective bargaining agreement; reviewed an insurance policy; gave a research assignment to the law clerk; and wrote a strongly-worded letter.

And I fried a few spammers.

I agree.

My success rate for putting plumbing back together so that it doesn't leak is about 50%. :(

Don't talk to me about stubborn drips. Kitchen tap drips. Two hours of tools and swearing later it still drips but now it works backwards. Turn it off and it's on. Turn it on and its off.

Sod it I'm off to play with my very second-hand PVR. Works ok as long as I don't change volume on the TV. Seems to be on the same frequency as the PVR.

I USED to be good at it. Heck, I replaced ALL of the copper pipe in this house, 10 years ago. Then in the garage yesterday, a vehicle ramp gets knock over onto a stretch of PVC, cracking it, and I think, "Replace it with copper, it will last forever..........".

Oy, Oy, Oy are my pipe sweating skills rusty.

Clean and dry with lot's of flux.

merrylander 11-02-2014 05:59 AM

Our house was plumbed with PVC at the start. Well water here is acid (Thanks Ohio Power) and our neighbor had to replace all their copper with PVC. It would even eat the brass or bronze fixtures so we installed an acid neutralizer a while back.

I'm having plumbing issues too. The basement toilet was running so I put in a new tank kit. The new water ballast leaked and sunk to the bottom of the tank so I had to do it all over again.

Today I'm working on the upstairs bathroom sink which has been dripping. I put a new cold water valve in yesterday. It still drips and now the hot water doesn't work at all. So today I'm removing the flexible pipe connecting the faucet and shut off valves to see if there is a hard water deposit clog. If the shut off valve is clear I'll check the flexible pipe. If the pipe is OK then the faucet itself is fucked and I'll have to replace it. We have really hard water here which can fuck up plumbing pretty quickly.

I couldn't help the furnace. It's probably 45 - 50 years old. I lit it as I always do this time of year but when it cycled on flames shot from the front of the unit. It was fortunate I happened to be standing right there and was able to put out the fire quickly. Melted all the wiring and the shut off valve. It was corroded beyond repair, so $2600 later I have a shiny new furnace, including a new flue liner to bring it up to code.

45-50 years is pretty good for a furnace isn't it?

I'll bet they don't make them like that any more.

piece-itpete 11-04-2014 09:58 AM

Grew up with a converted coal furnace, gravity riser - no fan. It was huge and awesome. They had to break in into pieces to get it out of the basement.

Sadly it was certainly horribly inefficient. But it would've worked forever.

Pete

merrylander 11-04-2014 10:17 AM

We had a coal stove in the front hall.
