WW11 The Soviet Union did not exist.
Last night I was watching a history of WW11 on the TV and it was as if
the Soviet Union did not exist. The war was won by Churchhill and Patton. No mention of Stalingrad or the Battle of Kursk nor General Zhukov. I expect bias but not to that degree. |
History Channel?

In time you will find that many 'documentaries' display thr producer's bias. |
Anyhow to a large degree many educated people in the west even if they
know about Stalingrad know zero about Kursk. Kursk was the battle which broke the back of Germany. |
I saw a good one on the battle of kursk ,I think it was called Battles 360 it had both generals featured and there manuevers broke down.It was very good,it has been a few years though,Teir is some good WWII documentarys,Plus a new movie Called Emporer, with Tommy lee Jones, about the war trials and the japanese emporer, should he be tried.very very Good.that movie is on netflix BTW.

It's been observed that returned veterans note, with time, mounting ignorance of once-mountainous matters, that they knew from long laborious traverse. |

I've seen some pretty stinky history on the 'History Channel.' They had some right winger out of the 'Citadel' doing a weird take on Stalingrad in one recent segment I happened to see. They kept the pro-Nazi slant pretty-much between the lines, but it was there....

The History channel is generally full of shit.
|
Still, I must take my above slam on History Channel back--the thing I saw was on PBS, alas. Right-wing funding at work, I suppose.
Here it is on Netflix: http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/70138...vieid=70138087 |
You didn't know tha the USA won every war in the last two hundred and forty years singlehandedly?
Come on, Don, get with the program, Sean Hannity would not approve of this. Dave |

I think the Soviet part of the conflict has always been seen through the American filter of Cold War monumentalism i.e. the Commies were plotting against us from the beginning. By monumentalism I mean a sort of Zorastian good-evil view of us and them as propagated by
American culture and government (both the Dems and the GOP) after WWll. Before 1941 Stalin and Hitler had sort of carved up Poland and were big trading partners. Hitler's racism and true belief in lebensraum caused him to invade Russia which turned out to be his undoing in the end. In Russia this war is called the Great Patriotic War and Putin's description of his enemies in the Ukrainian government as fascists is not a mistake but an attempt to tap into this strong sense of patriotism, as described by Hedric Smith in his book The Russians in a chapter entitled "The Second World War Was Only Yesterday." gosh I am smart. You guys never read the books I mention lol. You could not write a post like this 13 but I should not be gloating over my towering intellect with the likes of such a one as you.;) back to the Fringe and some more War and Peace later on. |

once I get this house paid off I want to travel to some places before I die I have heard really bad stories about Russian customs....there was a KFI radio show host here in Cali about 15 years ago who was an expert on the "stans" (those former USSR republics like Uzbekistan) who took some listeners there.... one of the people in his group was carrying about $2000 in cash and the Russian customs agents just confiscated the money. Stole it in other words. What could you do about that? nothing |
I was in West Berlin before the wall came down and everyone at the conference took a day trip into East Berlin - except for me. I had absolutely no desire to 'see' how the other side lived, still don't. Much as Florence and I travelled in the years after our marriage, dictatorships were not on the list of places. Madrid under Franco preceeded our marriage and it was nice but you could sense the oppression.

Yes the beer and sausage was much better in the west. I really got the waiter's approval whe he asked how many of those Nurnburg sausages I wanted and I said eight. |
It took supression of the Prague Spring to finally end any Western illusions of a Soviet utopia.
