or brake pedal. :D

:D

During my stint in the automotive biz I wrote a bit of software for automatic cruise control - the type that watches for traffic ahead and brakes/accelerates accordingly. It was pretty cool but nowhere near the complexity of what Google engineers are playing with today. The biggest issue with autonomous vehicles IMO will be serviceability. They will not be mainstream until they can survive being maintained by local service stations.

Hey, pretty soon we won't have to do anything. A computer will do it for us. All we'll have to do is sit in a chair all day while a robot feeds us and wipes our butts.

Ho difficult is it to drive? Isn't driving sorta fun? Or is driving now a secondary "task" that we must endure while we're doing other things.

Hiya Mr. Pots. Here in the megalopolis on the coast (LA/Orange co.) it would be a welcome respite not to have to deal with the braindead masses and the young invincibles on the roads and highways. Just kick back with a book or a martini in hand and watch the scenery drift past. :)

Heh, OK, you made your point. No way in hell I'd want to be on those west coast highways.

Give me the wide open flatland roadways....where you can crank up the music and get it up to 150....

Last time I drove in that area, I learned a few new hand signals. 😊

Will DWI deaths be a thing of the past with driverless cars? Amazing!

Wasillaguy 05-28-2014 05:31 PM

I'm looking forward to getting my pizza delivered without the meth head coming to my door.

If AK legalizes weed this year, you can have your local weed dealer deliver pizzas. :D A win win.

If they legalize? Possession for personal use of less than 4 oz. in a private residence is and has been legal.

Weed dealer? Cultivation of up to 25 plants in a private residence is and has been legal.

I don't think you've got a handle on Alaska law. We have a right to privacy per our state constitution.

A good writeup here from The Telegraph from UK.

Ten ways that driverless cars will change the world

When you really think about it this is gonna blow away a ton of jobs. Its not just the obvious driving professions; without car accidents who needs body shops or even car insurance? It may be the most revolutionary idea since the invention of the horseless carriage.

MrPots 05-29-2014 02:07 PM

But you could drive home drunk!

whell 05-29-2014 04:01 PM

So once we no longer have the responsibility of driving safely to avoid killing someone, perhaps we can evolve to the European model and start drinking beer at breakfast.
I can't wait!

Though places like Germany and Ireland definitely have beer-drinking cultures, their DUI laws and enforcement are a lot more stringent than ours.

I thought that you folks in Alaska were already doing that...

...or maybe that was vodka in your Corn Flakes rather than milk...

I think driverless cars will be awesome. Light, cheap, when they need serviced they'll drive themselves back and forth from the shop (if they're running)...

Pete
