WWII Birds Buzzing My Place

All week we've had B24s, P51 Mustangs and P40 Warhawks flying over us in Costa Mesa courtesy of the Lyon's Museum over at Orange County International airport. Pretty dang cool to hear and feel those Rolls Royce Merlin engines. I sure wish I could justify the $800 smackers for a backseat ride in a P51 trainer.

I used to go a shoot the Blue Angels back in my film photography days. Those engines will scare the pigibies out of you.

These are film shots with vintage SLR's manual focus.

In 2002 I had a seat on a B-17. Just before the flight Jack Roush asked if any of us wanted to fly with him in his P-51. Talk about having too many cool things to choose from. My head was spinning. :D

The first time I saw a B-17 I was mowing the yard. That came to a halt real quick as the plane flew over.

Flew in a Ford Trimotor once, that was a fab experience. Got some pix somewhere.

Planes of Fame has a pretty good annual show. We've been to a few out there. ;)

I'm pretty sure that's what gramps flew the US Mail in, LA to Salt Lake run. IIRC he got a promotion out of it from FDR when the feds temporarily took over. ;)

I hope you took Roush up on his offer Ed.

I stayed with the B-17 which was the original plan. During the flight I walked on the bomb bay catwalk while the doors were open. That was a rush. :)

The B-17 came to the area for some demo flights but the price was a bit too steep for me, much more than the Tri Motor demo.

Nice pictures. I saw the Tri-Motor at Oshkosh but did not take a ride. It is a gorgeous plane.

Here are some photos from the B-17 flight. The man at the waist gunner window was a Tuskegee Airman. The flight was a funeral flyover for one of his fellow airmen. I later made friends with the deceased's son on the internet. He is a fellow pilot/photographer and also a filmmaker. Pretty interesting guy.

Thinning out: anyone who was 21 in 1945 is going to be 90 this year.

[corrected my arithmetic...]

Ahh... a cool lesson on how the ignore list may influence a thread. I asked for such things in a special thread last week. :)
