Guitar Heroes

It's hard for me to limit the list to even ten. Not particularly in order, but:

Stevie Ray Vaughn
B.B. King
Leo Kottke
Gary Clark Jr. (at least potentially)
Jon McLaughlin (particularly when joined with Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia.)
Neil Young (sentimental reasons)
Roy Rogers
Derek Trucks
Sonny Landreth
Jeff Beck

Honorable Mention to John Mayer. His guitar skills are absolutely amazing. His selection of material is unfortunate.

Regards,

D-Ray

Funny how we had only one crossover but the ten limit probably is to blame. I purposely didn't read yours until after I posted. BB is certainly a goodie.

Pio1980 05-04-2014 10:58 PM

Add Tommy Emmanuel, I absolutely love this performance!

These would be my pick for Rock guitarist that really feel their playing. Shredders would be another list.

Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Jimmy Page
Brian May
Gary Moore
Tom Morello
Joe Satriani
Peter Green
Carlos Santana

aw one more Please
Ritchie Blackmore

icenine 05-04-2014 11:25 PM

Mick Taylor
Keith Richards
George Harrison
Mick Ronson
Pete Townshend
Albert King
Freddie King
Tom Morello
David Gilmour
Elmore James
Eric Clapton

bhunter 05-04-2014 11:50 PM

My favorites are:

Peter Green
Duane Allman
Eric Clapton
Albert Lee
Hendrix

SRV
Leo Kottke
Al Di Meola
Jeff Beck
Keith Richards

In the young category:
Derek Trucks
John Mayer
Joe Bonnamassa

There are so many that are really good technically. I like what Keith Richards said about himself and Ronnie: Neither I nor Ronnie are all that good of guitar players, but playing together we are. Come to think of it, I need to put Keith on the list for all those great riffs.

PS:
I forgot about Rory Gallagher.

Pio1980 05-04-2014 11:59 PM

Add Mark Knopfler for bringing clarity with great chops back to rock.

I put Keith on there more for his song writing prowess and image as the quintessential outlaw axman....;)

That's a real hard one for me. There is to many to think of but to make a long story short, I love good country and the sound of a steel guitar.

The Steel guitar has made it into the rock/pop area. Robert Randolph and the Family Band really rock out with Randoph's playing of the Sacred Steel.

First I've heard of them, thanks. Had to look one up. Not bad, about the 57 second mark I caught myself tapping my toes. :)

Not in order, but my list would include:

Ritchie Blackmore
Jeff Beck
SRV
Jimi Hendrix
Mark Knopfler
Slash
Jimi Page
Sonny Landreth
Gary Moore
Joe Satriani

Pio1980 05-05-2014 07:33 PM

Saw Deep Purple perform live on TV in the early 1970s, what a disappointment. Richie was so loaded and out of it he made a fool of himself, I pretty much ignored them and him after that.
Is he really that good?

Re: Wes Montgomery
I got this box set out of the library a few weeks ago...

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/PROGRESSIONS-...kb!~~60_35.JPG

For anybody interested in jazz guitar, or would like an introduction to jazz guitar, it's pretty good.

But I mention this because there's a 40 page or so booklet that comes with it. All sorts of interesting info on the tracklist, history and other stuff. The last section is from interviews with about 15 of today's top guitarists and they were asked to mention their top 3 influences. Wes Montgomery was noted as a major influence twice as often as anyone else.

Living, breathing, playing guitar heroes:

Richard Thompson
Leslie West
Billy Gibbons
Lindsey Buckingham
Derek Trucks
Jerry Douglas
David Lindley
Ry Cooder
Mick Taylor
Mark Knopfler

First time I heard that was a bar in Park City Utah 1969ish, long before the ski resort thing when it was still a depressed mountain mining town homesteaded by hippies.

Yep. Saw them both. In fact I damaged the hearing in my left ear, (Slight HF loss.), at a Rick Derringer concert in 1984.
