Pukka Sahib?
I checked his user profile. 3 posts and 475 visitors. Two days ago he had 55 posts. He deleted eagerly. Childish.
Anyway an interesting person, very intelligent, very educated. I also pleased him to stay some days ago. Is PC a lower class forum just because we spice our threads with (our sense of) humour pretty often? Does this make this forum less valuable? Less serious? Are we rabble? Farewell Pukka Sahib Sir...! Edit: For sure I was the only one who did not know what Pukka Sahib means. I updated my knowledge via Wiki. It means "True Gentleman", "Excellent Fellow". |
I think he was seeking something on a different plane than he found here, he doesn't seem to like the mindless banter we get into. (........all too often.)
His posts are always interesting and well written, I always like reading them. I was glad to see him back and a bit sad to see him go. However, he is sort of a strange Dude. Dave |
Well it is no sign of integrity if somebody damages threads by deleting all his posts. Team players are different...
|
Sorry but I do not appreciate people who believe they can look down on others. The true sign of a high intellect is patience with others who may be less endowed.
|
Are you claiming to be a patient man, Rob?
Dave |
When you start believing how much you are enlightend then you get to deep to contend with everyday life, and it time to head off to the hymalayas.

I think he was trying to model himself after Orwell's Ellis, from Burmese Days.

If you can't take the heat...
I can't spend any time on those serious political sites. If you can't break balls on occasion talking politics it's not for me. |
Pukka had such a jaundiced view of humanity which might explain his odd
behavior. |

According to some of the tracks he's left on the interwebs, he seems to follow a pattern of drama queen exits and eventual stealth returns, often under a new name. An odd duck.

I miss the guy.
So, he had a jaundiced view of humanity? It's not like there is no just cause for that, now is there? Dave |

I guess I just liked his style of writing. I dunno.

Please a little lesson in English.
Tell me something about the term "jaundice". Is that quite the same as "cynism"? If so, when do you use jaundice and when do you use cynism? What about the term "misanthropy" in this context? |
Let me try this Chris;
Misanthropy is the general hatred, distrust or disdain of the human species or human nature. A misanthrope, or misanthropist is someone who holds such views or feelings. Now jaundice is a disease, causing the skin to turn yellowish especially the white of the eye, but in the usage of English to look at something with a jaundiced eye is to regard it enviously, even with hatred. So no it is not really a synonym for a jaundiced eye view. None of the above reflect the way I regard life as I will unabashedly admit that I am a total romantic alsways have been alwways will be, just to damn old now to change. |
Thank you Rob my fatherly friend for these remarks and explanations.
"Jaune" is French and means "yellow". We also say: "Gelb (oder grün) vor Neid werden" - "turning yellow (or green) with envy". But there isn't the aspect of hatred in it. |
I take "Jaundiced eye" as as cynicism/ distrust.

RE the topic, sorry to see a thinking independent person depart. OTOH, I'd like to engage folks that can manage a discussion based on universally accepted facts and sources that may or may not agree with me without repeating opinions as if saying it over and over without supporting it with independent non-partisan data will make it so.
|
Independent thinking I can respect, lectures I can cheerfully do without. His post re the gun control topic was spot on and as clear a statement of the Constitution as any I have seen posted here. I can only surmise that it was the constant hammering of the opinion that the 2nd was designed so that people could overthrow the government should they feel it had gotten out of hand that caused him to leave.
Frankly it was the series of GB&U that tired me out waiting for a description of a good person. As you might imagine in 83 years my life has not been totally devoid of its nastier moments, However I did and I do try to rise above them and put those moments behind. Blessed now with the love of a good woman I find that much easier to do. There I believe I got all the typos - damn macular degeneration. |

However a "jaundiced view" : Thinking that people or things are bad, especially because you have had bad experiences in the past.

Well I think it is time for my Pukka Sahib thread to commit suicide. :D
Seriously - it is moving what you guys, mpholland, icenine, Rob, tell us here. Thank you. It is comforting because I made similar experiences when I was a twen. |
