Toyota to pay $1.2 billion settlement

Toyota has settled with the Justice Dept. for 1.2b dollars over its deception
with regards to the acceleration problem.

bobabode 03-19-2014 10:07 PM

That's a huge settlement. A lot of people were killed by those stuck gas pedals. :(

4-2-7 03-19-2014 10:25 PM

One thing I don't like about these fed law suits is they collect the big bucks and the victims get nothing.

Like all the banks they sue for mortgage fraud and the likes.

That doesn't mean that Toyota didn't deserve the judgment.

Yes this is a significant fine.

Toyota has been cruising until the Oklahoma case in which the jury believed an expert pointing to faulty electronics.

Yup. And the cost will be passed on to future consumers.

piece-itpete 04-23-2014 11:11 AM

Not if they don't buy Toyotas ;)

Pete

MrPots 04-23-2014 11:22 AM

I'm stunned most folks can even afford a new car these days.

Dondilion 04-23-2014 11:48 AM

BTW there are a new set of youngsters who are not interested into cars and not even bother to get a license.

They move into urban areas with reasonable public transport and ride bicycles.

According to Pete, every college kid can.

It's a free country, anyone can come up and look for themselves.

Never said all though ;)

High School kids are stupid about their cars.

They will work their asses off and put every dime they make into them.

And they can do that because mom and dad are paying all their living expenses so everything they make is disposable income. A High School kid with a part time job probably has more disposable income at that time than he will ever have again.

piece-itpete 04-23-2014 03:20 PM

Agreed, though it was different for me, but this is rich mans' land and a fair portion of them are almost certainly gifts. It's amazing. I've seen it before in another rich town.

The couple year old riced civics with 11 subwoofers though, at least they probably screwed them up themselves :) One gas station near me employs some local kids and they are really well mannered, nice kids.

I understand.

You live around rich Republicans.

I would too if I could afford it.

They keep their houses up real nice.

piece-itpete 04-23-2014 03:43 PM

If they're Republicans, what's with all the Priuses? Lot of granola type shops too.

Pete

Wasillaguy 04-23-2014 03:45 PM

He said he looks "at all the new cars on the lot", not "all the cars on the lot are new".

You just failed to understand that he doesn't look at the old ones.

That depends entirely on what side of town that HS is located.

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 11:52 AM

Usually I'd agree, but I live in the slum of this particular town and it's still very nice. I looked it up - it's in the top 10 per capita income in the state. I moved in last year. Everyone is, um, nice. So nice it's almost creepy. On the plus side car watching is fun.

I know, it'll make me a rich guy :D My rent is around $750 a month including water and heat. Not many would call 820 sf and no garage very rich-like. And the killer, I gave up my AR9s :(

Good God Pete.

And you vote Republican?

You're dumber than I thought.

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 12:28 PM

The Dems already took my used car parts, and the Dem county government here screws people by marking up water that Dem Cleveland already marked up. I'm sure it's to help poor people.

I like the apartment as much as I could like any. If it had a 1 car attached garage I'd be tempted to stay.

What did they do?

Close down the U-PULL-IT Lot?

Then by all means lets let the Republicans put the free market in charge of your water supply.

Quote:

The Elk River chemical spill occurred on January 9, 2014 when crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) was released from a Freedom Industries facility into the Elk River, a tributary of the Kanawha River, in Charleston in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 12:56 PM

Cash for Clunkers. Now only did it scrap a lot of good parts, it also drove up used car prices, so folks could buy new cars.

A spill doesn't excuse the governments' hiking water prices for additional income. That affects the poor disproportionately. And the damage it does to the perception that government looks out for the common man is immense. Unless you're a Cleveland voter, they don't see the connection ;)

Btw I realize the government here isn't necessarily the government anywhere else.

Pete

So you are concerned for the poor, and you vote Republican.

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 01:16 PM

You would too if you lived here.

A while back I did a breakdown of Congresspeople by party and the Dems were far richer overall than the GOP. Apparently their talk is more soothing :p

To quote Samuel L Jackson, "Wake the fuck up Pete!" ;)

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 01:37 PM

The Dems are pro-poor because they say so? Killing argument there ;) Apparently you didn't see how I was beaten down for saying they can't afford free range chicken, or how water is marked up by Dems in Cleveland and Akron. Let alone the crickets over cash for clunkers. And of course, rich Democrats are altruistic angels.

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 01:54 PM

Sorry to hear about your back but that's what you get carrying water for the oligarchs like the Koch brothers and their ilk, my friend. :(

That's only cause I like ya Pete. :p Noonereal was right, you're wasting your talents supporting the right. They aren't Republicans anymore.

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 02:25 PM

The logic that says I should therefore go full on 'so********t' escapes me ;)

I realize that the GOP is Dem light, or the other way around, doesn't really matter. They are both big government parties that exist to serve themselves. It's basically a rear guard action now as the war has been lost and we will bow to our DC masters sooner or later.

Better? ;)

Hell no, I don't think you should go soshulist or even Democrat. Just go Independent and stop following the herd. ;)

piece-itpete 04-24-2014 02:58 PM

Does being independent and not following the herd mean moving left?

Pete
