Meanwhile, in Scotland...

:D

They're going to vote on independence on Sept 18th.

It's fairly close-seeming at this point.

Taking the U out of the UK?

Zeke 02-13-2014 11:38 AM

This is, in my opinion, sort of a big deal...

piece-itpete 02-13-2014 11:41 AM

Agreed, it's an incredible thing. Top of the list - what happens to the Union Jack? ;)

My gut reaction is they'd be crazy, but that's also uninformed. I don't know.

I read in the Post that some posh Tory was threatening to take them off the pound sterling if they carried through with it. That'll raise some hackles in Edinburgh. ;)

Then England would need to redo more that the Union Jack, Scottish symbols are all over the money, postage stamps, buildings, etc.

piece-itpete 02-14-2014 09:29 AM

I'm seeing a lot of threats bandied back and forth, but if they withdraw (which I seriously doubt) they will all play nice I'd bet. If they stay on the Pound they wouldn't have control over their own currency.

They'd also have to rename the Union Jack. Union Joe?

Pete

The Anglais will have to go back to drinking wine. Whiskey wars...:D

There's always the euro. I think the EU would welcome them with open arms, especially if the North Sea oil fields become Scottish.

Then they still would not have control of their own currency, better to create their own.

The thistle and the blue & white "St. Andrew's Cross" flag? Do these exist on their own on British currency and postage?

While thinking about this, it dawned on me that the Union Jack doesn't incorporate any Welsh symbology, a white and green flag with a golden dragon "passant". This despite the fact that the British heir apparent is invested as the Prince of Wales. What's up with that?

You have a point there, Rob.

Nah, Union Jock! ("Jock" is a slightly derogatory nickname for a Scotsman, like "Mick" or "Paddy" for an Irishman.)

John

piece-itpete 03-04-2014 01:41 PM

Lol that's awesome. I'm going to pass that on to my UK friends :D

Pete

BlueStreak 03-04-2014 01:43 PM

I thought about "Union Lucien" in honor of my Scottish grandfather, Lucien Read. But, it doesn't sound right.

Dave

Dondilion 03-04-2014 01:59 PM

If it happens the British army will miss some fearsome fellows.

bobabode 03-04-2014 02:15 PM

Union Haggis :p

icenine 03-04-2014 02:28 PM

I think the Scots will keep the flag the same since it would er, cost too much to change everything.

piece-itpete 03-04-2014 02:32 PM

And you know what they say about a Scotsman! ;)

I think they've flown the St. Andrews Cross for a long time, probably in addition to the Union Jack, so they'll just have to haul down one and keep the other.

So, Combwork, where are you?

John

piece-itpete 08-19-2014 02:56 PM

Soon.

Polls show unification:

It would be interesting to watch if they did break off. Wonder how the British government would react?

Dave

nailer 08-19-2014 05:15 PM

They'd take it with a stiff upper lip old chap.

Dondilion 08-19-2014 05:35 PM

The Scots will do well on their own...it is said they are ultra economists.

nailer 08-19-2014 06:39 PM

The Scots are frugal, engineers, and they managed to figure a way to ruin a nice walk.

bobabode 08-19-2014 06:41 PM

Friggin' ungrateful Picts. Kill 'em all.

piece-itpete 08-20-2014 08:55 AM

ROTFLMAO!!!

I've caught reference that the British Parliament may well become more conservative without the Scottish vote.

How many are there? I only remember one, played with 'retreat' every afternoon at 5 PM.

Pio, back when my dad played they I figured they were infinite :D

There's quite a few. I actually like bagpipes occasionally.

We just got the sad standard 'Taps-to' after 'retreat' on valveless bugle, as played at military burials. Haven't heard the others.

Best of luck to ya on the vote Combwork. It's been seven long centuries and overdue imo.
