Griping...

I have an Echowars (dude from AK who lives nearby) restored Sansui G9000DB and two Klipsch Cornwalls that have not been hooked up in over a year due to lack of space.

FUCK.

That is all.

piece-itpete 01-28-2014 12:30 PM

LOL! You're lucky still though, Glenn does great work!

You were just talking about perspective? I've been playing cds through my blueray player -> tv speakers. I need a box of wine daily to improve sound quality and forget my miserable existence ;)

If you're space challenged, you can find computer speakers real cheap at the thrifts. Usually better than stock TV speakers.

Right now, I'm listening to John Williams classical guitar on FM through the bedroom system.

Magnum Dynalab indoor ribbon antenna.

Luxman T310u tuner, rebuilt and calibrated by Terry Dewick.

Luxman L309 integrated amplifier.

ADS L710 speakers.

Dave

BlueStreak 01-28-2014 12:57 PM

Zeke, maybe you should get rid of your bed. That would free up space. A sleeping bag can just be rolled up and stuck in the corner.

Priorities, my good man. Priorities.

I'm working equipment challenged  Even my backup receiver died a slow, horrible death. Sure, use vintage gear they said. You'll get great sound on a budget they said. You'll love it they said. On the plus side the dead components make very good doorstops.

:D

You mean use the 'puter speakers with built in amps? That's a great idea as the TV has no amp'd outs and the speaks on my computer are fairly good, and have a little sub. I might try it tonight! If I have the correct adapters. I probably do, time to break out the misc crate, thanks.

I've got the Infinities just sitting there on both sides of the TV grr. Soon though, very soon.

Need some headphones? PM me.

A Sansui 9000 and Cornwalls? It just occurred to me what a powerhouse set up that is.

You don't need a bigger living room, you need a blimp hangar.

This is why I started building my own. I like DIY, but I got sick of constantly fixing, or paying someone else to fix, ancient gear that just keeps effin' up. I love the old stuff, but sometimes you just want to listen to some tunes without having to worry something is going to go claws up on you.

I have some Klipsch PM20 computer speakers I use at work that can sound really good - as long as the folks in the offices around me are gone for the day.

JI made a kind offer to me, and got me to realize - as my sand amp (hopefully) works, and I have a volume knob in a little box (from my biamp days), I have everything I need to play cds though the Infinities! Hooray for PC! And down with aging grey matter :) Doing it tonight.

200 solid wpc into little bookshelves, I'd better go easy on the beer this evening :D

The missus finally let me bring my '96 Klipsch 5.5 series speakers up from the dungeon. The house is filled with beautiful noise once again.... I rocked it the entire weekend... I keep having to straighten the pictures.

Called on account of weather! The crate with that particular stuff must be in 'the shed' - my storage space - and I didn't feel motivated to dig through it in the cold. Very soon and I'll definitely post.

Thinking about using computer speakers for the tv, that's just such a good idea btw.

My wife is tolerant with various hi-fi equipment but not big speakers.

I have units falling out of the closets and she has not complained, but
she grumbles about a reasonable size Advent speaker.

The result I am always on the look out for good quality book shelf speakers.

I really would love to get a pair of W90 Wharfedales but that would not make for HARMONY IN THE HOUSE.

icenine 01-29-2014 11:11 AM

I had a pair W70s....

They are ok but I really think the box, sand, and English origin sort of make the Wharfies more popular than perhaps should be...however they are much better than Pioneer CS type speakers

Event Studio Monitors 20/20 passives are really great for small area listening...they look like BPC but keep an eye out on CL

The Wharfies need low wattage KT66 tube amps. :D

I sold my KT66 tube when I realized ... no big speakers.

I have compromised with my wife in the living room. I have a relatively small pair of Acoustic Research Connoisseurs in that system, but have speakers as big as I wish in the family room and the man-cave.

Another model that puts nice sound in small package is the EPI Model 100.

they sounded punchy and crisp on my Jolida 16 watt amp................
not bad but sort of boomey....

mine were not in the best shape. I will only get another Wharfedale if they are the e series or MINT with purple tweets. And they have to be cheap.

piece-itpete 02-03-2014 10:39 AM

Got the volume know Saturday afternoon, banged my ankle Saturday eveing. Spent Sunday pretty much laid up, ach. Results soon.

icenine 02-03-2014 11:07 AM

piece-itpete 02-03-2014 11:39 AM

It's kinda funny, my head's humming (to They Call Me the Breeze) 'They call me the gimp, I'm just limpin' down the road' :o At least I don't have to use the cane, yet.

I have a nasty winter cold at the moment. I think it's somehow Obama's fault.

merrylander 02-03-2014 12:13 PM

Well it was raining but turned to sleet, bummer.

At least I can listen to my Yammie CR-3020 through the Yammie NS-690s. If'n I want LPs there is the Yammie PX-2, CDs through a CDC755 and tapes through one of three RTRs.

My Merrylander restored Sansui G9000 is singing quite nicely as I type this.

Jealousy abounds!

BlueStreak 02-03-2014 01:51 PM

I'm fixin' to go spin up some tunes. It'll be the Musical Fidelity A3CD, Bottlehead Crack Speedball, BeyerDynamic DT880.

I'm thinking; Pink Floyd---The Wall.

I've had a stubborn cold for over a week, now. Sucks.

icenine 02-03-2014 01:55 PM

A little Mel Torme is in order

I wish it had rained some out here we need it

Don't be, I have at least four or five units that are repairable left
sitting here because I was so busy fixing other people's units and
now my eyesight and hands are not up to the task so they are likely
headed fir the county recycle.

piece-itpete 02-04-2014 10:05 AM

Did the bluray -> volume pot (alps) -> amp setup yesterday.

Even with the weakest-link bluray player as a source, Pandora to boot, it's nice to hear the clean sound of a) a real stereo, and b) the simple circuit cleanliness.

I'll pull out the good cd player later this week and play with speaker placement some more.

Pete

icenine 02-04-2014 10:16 AM

I am starting to see some HDMI capable AV receivers by Onkyo at the the thrifts lately...
so I guess one could use a blu-ray player and that for the new blu ray audio stuff coming out.

Pete

piece-itpete 02-10-2014 11:19 AM

Got the TT, and I can use my lux pre with the tape out and external volume knob till I get a chance to see what's wrong.

Sweet, sweet vinyl, it's been too long :D

Pete

Zeke 02-10-2014 11:23 AM

I just got some sweet new cans (earphones) in the mail which I am looking to use, tonight. Oh, the sweet sounds of the Grateful Dead...

piece-itpete 02-10-2014 12:18 PM

Hippie! :p
