**A judge threw out Alexander's "stand your ground" self-defense claim, noting that she could have run out of the house to escape her husband but instead got the gun and went back inside.**

The above^. I'm not sure how much difference it woulda made but she may have came out better if she had the gun on her person at the time she first feared her life was in danger. Going out to the car to get her gun and then returning back into the home is probably what cost her.

icenine 07-14-2013 12:26 AM

Yeah you are right I am just venting...but it does detail a sort of double standard. She may be far from innocent, but mandatory sentencing laws have put her into the prison industry for far too long....she should have been given a more lenient sentence.

hillbilly 07-14-2013 12:51 AM

I know what you mean. Heck, I've been rattled all day. Can you believe that people drove over 50 miles to a rinky dink town from Nashville to protest against a group of teens frog gigging here last night? Lordy mercy! Of all things going on in this country they wasted airtime on something of much less importance.

icenine 07-14-2013 12:57 AM

Those protesters upset about hunting frogs? I wonder if they stopped at McDonald's on the way.....

It may strike some as sounding silly as to how the event organized, but the frogs weren't wasted.

Wasillaguy 07-14-2013 01:16 AM

Frog gigging is a good safe activity for teenagers. See, if they drink too much beer, the canoe will tip over and the start battery from the car they were using for the floodlight will go to the bottom.
This prevents them from drunk driving, and they are forced to sleep it off in the car and walk out when it gets light the next day.
Not that I have any knowledge on the subject, but it sounds like it could work that way.

P.S. frogs did not go to waste. Made a fire and cooked the legs on a green stick.

Uhhhh, Yeah. Just as Zimmermans refusal to just let Martin go about his business unharrassed is what cost Martin his life.

Thats the point, Dave. Why protest and make news over meaningless shit when there are much more important things in our country that we should be focused on. It tells me people care more about protecting frogs than they do their financial future.

Oh...I misunderstood you.

Yep, you're absolutely right. I concur whole-heartedly.

"We have the best legal system in the world"

I have heard this at least 15 times since I woke up about an hour ago.

Can anyone quantify or qualify this?

We lead the world in incarcerations, is that what theyl mean?

We dump our jails with mostly minorities and poor, is that what they mean?

I won't even post the raw truth on what happened last night.

merrylander 07-14-2013 07:02 AM

Simple emough noon, a murderer walked.

Oerets 07-14-2013 07:29 AM

This just happen to be in today's paper. Before the verdict bet the numbers are even higher tomorrow!

From a very distant point of view - even more confusing. In my opinon probably an involuntary reflex action (Pavlov) triggered the gun. This is my way to find an explanation for the incident. If so an exploration, an analysis of such a diagnosis would be pointless. It will happen again. Sad.

They taste just like a chicken would taste if it were a frog.

Having not watched or listened to TV coverage of the trial, I'm content to defer to those in the jury. They decided quickly and unanimously based upon the evidence presented. Who am I to second guess, particularly when I simply don't give a shit?

It means that our legal system sets an extremely high standard for the prosecution to prove their case. IMHO, that's a good thing.

On the other hand, minimum sentencing guidelines are a function of the legislative branch, not the judicial branch. The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world not because it has higher crime rates, but because it imprisons more types of criminal offenders, including non-violent and drug offenders, and keeps them in prison longer. Again, not a function of the judicial system, but of the legislative branch. Its also the executive branch enforcing things like the war on drugs (whether or not that's a good thing is open to question).

Excellent reply.

Thank you

Per capita, we have more laws and lawyers than the rest of the world?

CarlV 07-14-2013 10:13 AM

Remind me to never go to that state ever, for anything at all, this is just another reason to stay away.
I can't get past that if it wasn't for everything Zimmerman did that night Martin would be alive. Fact.
So OJ got off and turned into a common street thug. Dan White got off and ended up killing himself. I wonder what will happen to this murderer that walks? Anywhere he goes he is the murderer with no remorse and did not pay his debt to society.
I think I would rather be convicted of something, show remorse and then live my life after paying my dues. I reckon it is a good thing he lives in a gated community. He probably should get an AR15 to do his stalking with now.

Robert Zimmerman Jr. said his brother was 'going to be looking around his shoulder for the rest of his life'.

So who is going to protect this SOB?

I think the Black Panthers can make a contribution to society here by following Zim around the rest of his life to protect any children he might cross and alert any area he might travel to.

1. Zims is garbage.
2. He can't help that.
3. Eventually, he'l get his.

Threat? Of course not. I am merely saying that the manner in which he thinks will, relatively soon, lead him to a situation wherein accountability will not be lost upon him.

OJ wound up in jail because he just can't help himself. Zims is similar.

I disagree in part. Zim is a serious coward. OJ had decades of adulation to lead him to believe he was omni important and powerful.

Zim is going to get himself in trouble alright but it won't be physically, it will be financially. We already know he is not honest and with all the temptation he will have to hide a buck he will quickly succumb.

Monies will come in quickly and be moved even quicker. As I said, we already had a look into this window of his.

Hey, in FL the black woman defending herself from someone who admitted she needed to do just what she did get 20 years, but an old white guy who murders his wife's lover (and apparently he knew of their relationship) gets to walk.

I was down in Florida in mid April and other than Florida natives, the most common license plates down there were Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick. We even saw quite a few from PEI.

You won't be seeing mine anytime soon. I have no desire to visit a place where it is ok to kill folks just for being black.

Some retirement fun?

Personally, I love Disney World, I am not staying away. Also my kid will be playing in Miami and Tallahassee every other year. :)

Virginia Tech too. ;)

Florida has always been a racist shithole. Read some Hemingway. Leave it to the rednecks and the loco wingnut Cubano's, they deserve each other.

That was my big surprise when I moved to Florida. My visits previously had all been to the Miami area. The further you get from there, the worse it gets.

Our trip to Florida was a spur of the moment decision based upon some good travel deals at the time. We were able to fly one-way to Fort Lauderdale for $57 and then pick up a one-way full size rental car for $19 a day (a special deal the rental car companies have concocted to help return the cars north for the Florida off-season). We drove up the coast for 10 days visiting Melbourne, St. Augustine, Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington and the Outer Banks.

If you go to Blacksburg, drop me a line and I'll give you some tips about food, music, sights, etc.
