China 2025

They say that by 2025, China will pass the U.S. as the world's largest economy. The U.S., on the other hand will have by far the largest military. In fact, if you look at what we currently invest our considerable assets in, the military accounts for almost a quarter of it.

Maybe it doesn't matter. China will be the suits and we'll be the cops. Eh, guess it could be worse. But kind of a bummer. I've never lived in a world where the U.S. wasn't the economic leader of the world. Guess my kids will have to navigate that shift. Wonder what you guys think.

Charles 11-16-2009 09:45 AM

I feel sorry for the kids. We're quickly becoming a nation of sharecroppers.

Do you suppose our new Chinese masters will treat us kinder than the current lot?

Chas

Fast_Eddie 11-16-2009 09:55 AM

Hope they treat us better than the banks treated the sharecroppers during the dustbowl. Unfettered capitalism. But I'm not counting on it.

BlueStreak 11-16-2009 10:19 AM

I see China becoming both the millitary and the economic leader, by a Loooooong shot.

I see America as continuing to be it's own worst enemy.
With the most popular solution to our problems being to continue devolving
back into a hunt and gather society of ignorant cornpones hiding in
the woods, as Sarah Palin winks and wiggles her ass in our faces from the mandated telescreens hung in every cave tuned to the only remaining channel---FauxNews.

But, that's okay, we'll still have our crappy (Chinese made.) small arms and
a small plastic Jesus figurine (Also made in China.) in our pockets to protect us.

Oh, there will still be wealth to be found in the US. But it will be the Multibillionaire Chinese businessmen and their Wall Street flunkies living in gated communities who only let "Peasant-Americans" in to clean their shitters and shine their shoes.

But, hey. At least everything will be cheap, we won't have to worry about healthcare anymore (Cuz none of us will have it.), and all of the rednecks will be free to hunt and fish all day, (Because they no longer have a choice.).

But, I'll do my best to remain optimistic..............................despite it all.:D

Well, you can do that now, Chas. You just have to quit your job. So long as you and I have a choice, that's fine. I just don't want to see hobbies turn into necessities for either one of us. Don'tcha know?:D

Speakin' O' jobs, it that crazy time again!

China has two huge looming issues: exchange rate, and succession.

But yeah, they will step up into their new role barring calamity and it will be um, interesting.

It's scary, but probably won't be the end of the world. But I fear it will be the start of the U.S. not being what we've been used to. When I was in High School there was Russia. Most of my adult life, it's been us. Guess it's just the way things are. Can't stay on top forever. Probably best in the scheme of things, somehow. But it bugs me all the same.

I would imagine that China will overtake us in GNP, they have a huge country and a lot of people. Provided they don't poison themselves due to a lack of environmental controls.

Then again, this current downturn reminds me of the eighties. The mood of the country was grim, and the conventional wisdom was that the Japanese would wind up owning the country.

They did make some headway over here, but a lot of them went home wearing barrels.

When it comes to passing out a good old fashioned screwing, the Yankee businessman is nobody's fool.

We may have a bunch of cheap Chinese junk, but all they got was a bunch of digits on a computer screen. And we're busy inflating the decimal point to the right.

Don't forget the IMF. The American taxpayer has been bailing out deadbeat countries for years. And as long as the central bankers can keep extracting their juice, I don't see things changing much.

The UN is 60 years old and we're still on top. If we're smart about it we can stay on top.

I agree- I don't really think the U.N. has anything to do with it.

Dunno. We'd have to really get our financial act in order. Don't see it happening. Shoot, we keep barrowing *more* from China. Not exactly headed the right direction. Don't see it changing as long as no one hear wants to pay the bills. I guess it could happen, I just don't see how from where I'm sitting. People are getting more and more greedy and less and less tolerant. Formula for disaster.

Grumpy 11-16-2009 04:24 PM

Why would we want to be on top ?

So the US is gonna be #2 pretty soon...Big deal. I doubt if things will really change all that much. The Chicoms have what, 3,4,5X the population than we do-it stands to reason that, yes, they're gonna have a bigger economy than we do. Their leaders seem to be a cautious lot, I don't think they really want to do much of anything to upset the applecart-They realise that anything they do to hurt US is only going to hurt themselves in short order. Leastways, I hope they understand that...

I see the US and China as a subset of the "ruling class."

The ruling class are not American nor Chinese first. They are globalists first and become America or Chinese only when it is of benefit to their economic interests.

I'm a lazy f**k. I always prefer to be on the bottom.

Seriously,

I don't understand why this is so important to so many people. Being on top has always been a PITA, if you think about it. Let all of the "no loads" go begging from the Chinese. Let them be the worlds cops. We could stick to defending OUR OWN shores, building our own economy, taking care of our own people and (maybe) helping out our closest friends a little here and there. And that's it.

Shoot, it sounds like Heaven to me.:D

One wise person I know calls it 'Chimerica'. We're joined at the hip with a totalitarian state, by design, to bring it into the circle of civilized nations. Toss in our helping form the E.U. (a goal of ours since ww2) and we are a victim of our own success.

We're a victim of our own excess. ;)

I don't think we were all that instrumental in putting forth the idea of the European Union. If we were, Britain wouldn't have resisted for as long as they have. (They still don't use the Euro.) It wouldn't have taken much arm-twisting on our part to bring Britain into line.

The existence and power of the EU was one of the primary reasons we were forced to cobble together NAFTA. We had to do something to offset the power of the EU. Trouble is it's a total abortion. Nobody benefits other than the big multinationals who can take advantage of cheap labor and weak, largely unenforced environmental standards in Mexico.

Ah heck, I can't remember where I picked it up, I think it was Kissengers memoirs.

We didn't want to fight in Europe again, we knew right out the gate we needed to have Germany and France on the same money.

Never did hear the big sucking sound, more like a slow hiss :)

More than enviroment, lack of gov't regs too. We can strangle ourselves.

You could be right but I wouldn't believe it on just Henry the K's signature. ;)

You mean Kissenger's not the idol? :D

He said that when Nixon met with Mao, Mao said he was having trouble with women, that they were too radically communist, he kept asking Nixon to take his women lol.
