Beer thread.

We were talking beer a while back and I can't find it.

Christmas time! (Time for Christmas ales anyway) :)

I think I mentioned drinking an entire 6 of Great Lakes Christmas Ale.

Long and short, it was a mistake. Amazing. I've since spoken to a bartender who said 'When the kegs of that came in our regular drunks turned into zombies' lol.

It's GREAT though. Moderation.

Yesterday I had some of Goose Islands' Mild Winter. I like their 'Bittah' (Honkers' Ale), and this ranks right up there but with just a little 'Christmas' flavor. I really like this stuff for the season anyway. 7 thumbs up.

Our local brew. Apparently, really good stuff. (I don't drink.) If memory serves, I think they're in the process of opening a brewery in the Midwest.

Excellent, I'll watch for it!

Grabbed myself a six of New Belgiums "Snow Day".................

It's alright, but their best is still "Fat Tire", IMHO.

I've written Great Lakes a few times about marketing down here, all I get is, "We're workin' on it.":(

In the frig at Chez Finnbow:

Victory Prima Pils (German style Pilsener)
Victory Hopdevil (IPA)
Heavy Seas Loose Canon (IPA)
Founders Porter
Goose Island Pere Jacques (Belgian-style dubbel)

I'm sure that IPA guys will find Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale to their liking.

Hoppy ales are for trendies and hipsters.......

Good stuff. I think I prefer their year-round offering, Torpedo. That said, all of Sierra Nevada's beers are very good.

piece-itpete 12-14-2012 01:52 PM

Tried Guinness Generous Ale. It seems to be more based on their Black Lager (which I really don't like), but it was gooder-er.

Not bad....

Tried Moose Drool, from Big Sky, I thought it'd be thick but ended up a lightish ale, a bit nutty for me. But 5 stars for the name :)

Cheers everyone, have a great weekend!

BEER? What? Where? Did somebody say Beer?

mpholland 01-18-2013 06:38 PM

If you are into beer, Portland is the place to be. I work there, but prefer to live in Washington state. I don't drink the stuff, so I won't comment much more.

Being in a political forum, we shouldn't forget how many deaths alcohol contributes to annually. :)

Lately, I've been quaffing New Belgiums "Winter Abbey Ale"............

One of the best beers I've ever had.

Made a fortunate mistake. Meant to grab of six of Fat Tire, and instead picked up a six of New Belgium's 1554 Enlightened Black Ale. Sharing it with my father in law. Very nice.

My boys brought over some of Boulevard's Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale for my birthday, and I'm able to settle in to have some tonight. It's very full flavored and a bit hoppy.

I've been told that Mills Best is every bit as good as Buckhorn.

Beer is beer sometimes......

My Milwaukee's Best purchase is an example of chained cpi...less money in my pocket because of high gas prices and coming furloughs cause me to buy cheaper beer....

I'd probably be drinking Champagne Velvet if they still made it.

Always thought it was pretty good stuff for cheap.

BTW, do you remember whenever you had to be careful opening a beer so that it didn't foam all over the place?

Now you can kick any of it across the room, and it still looks flat when you open it.

Are you serious? If I try that and I lose half of my Milwaukee's Best I will be VERY upset with you;)

piece-itpete 07-02-2013 10:14 AM

LOL!

My budget beer is Busch Light. Clear as a mountain stream, head for it, reach out, it's here, Buuuuushhhhhhh.... :)

Tried 'Dragons Milk' the other day. I ordinarily don't buy beer with 'milk' in the name but was at a fancy beer/wine store with the bar that's becoming so common here (I like it, drink beer while shopping for more beer to drink :) ) and when I said 'I like Guinness' that's what I got, on the house to boot.

Guinness is more like bread than milk. Anyway I sit down have a good draught and sure enough, even though it's black as coal it tastes creamy. I mention it to the guy next to me he says 'you know it's 10%, right?' No, I didn't.

Because it isn't. It's 4.2% ABV and only about 125 calories per 12 oz. I think people confuse the dark roast in the malt for high strength.

piece-itpete 07-02-2013 12:47 PM

Ah so. Advice from strangers, it's as bad as arguing over the internet :D

I think he was referring to the Dragon's Milk-
http://newhollandbrew.com/beer/mains...-barrel-stout/

Most stouts and porters are lower in alcohol, but not that one!

piece-itpete 07-02-2013 01:00 PM

That's it!!

Pete

Wasillaguy 07-02-2013 01:01 PM

never tried it, but it's on my list now

piece-itpete 07-02-2013 01:13 PM

Like I said, it's too creamy for me, but I've been finding that even stuff like Burning River and Honkers Ale is becoming too sweet as well, so maybe my tastes are changing.

It didn't taste very strong (unusual for a strong beer imo) but I made the SO drive when I left.

That stuff has added sugar, a brewing practice common among the Belgian Ales. It jacks up the ABV and imparts a candy sweetness. I'm generally not big on amped up sweet beers of this ilk, though they can be nice split between a couple of people out of a brandy snifter.

http://newhollandbrew.com/beer/files...sMilk-Spec.pdf

Wasillaguy 07-02-2013 06:41 PM

I'm pretty sure all the mass produced beers have either rice or corn sugar added, that's how they cut costs. The best evidence of this is to brew your own beer with 100% grain. You can't possibly make anything that tastes as crappy as Bud or Miller.
How sweet the beer is depends on how much they add, and how much the yeast eats up before it dies. Most beer yeasts can't survive in an alcohol content much above 5%.
Strong beers and barelywines use wine yeasts, which can survive up to about 12%.

Doesn't anybody drink the cheap shit?

I guess that makes me a high rolling snob, I normally stock my fridge with Silver Bullets.

Just never could acquire a taste for O'Doul's.
