When will we hear the end of "fiscal cliff?"

I suppose that its the nature of politics and journalism that particular catch-phrases and shorthand become predominate for short spurts. But I am sick and tired of the term "fiscal cliff" and all of the plays on words that fall off of it. The 99% was used pervasively for awhile and slipped into more occasional use. The 47% has had some staying power. "Arab spring" showed up in some pretty hefty word clouds. I just hope that we have reached the saturation point of this latest key word, and that maybe people can find a more rational way to identify the economic state of affairs.

D-Ray

I've heard "fiscal curb" and "bunny slope".:) I agree that cliff is an annoying term that doesn't cover it. Fiscal Russian roulette?

barbara 12-01-2012 05:19 AM

Fiscal mess sums it up for me.

BlueStreak 12-01-2012 06:35 AM

Fiscal Strawman?

Fiscal Boogeyman?

WAPO suggests "Austerity Crisis"
One commenter suggests "poison pill", I'd like to go with that.

Poison pill makes sense to me. It does a better job of conveying the sense that the politicians did this willingly, rather than the fiction that this is something that they just came upon. Austerity crisis communicates well the danger faced by the GOP approach. Another description is the ongoing game of chicken. Finally, Norquist soup.

I heard someone on TV (can't remember who) say that we are in a car at 4:00AM and Lindsey Lohan is driving.

BlueStreak 12-01-2012 11:33 AM

I think people worry too much. Then they get together, combining their neurotic field forces and it starts going around and around swirling into a maelstrom of irrational panic........................

Excellent case for marijuana legalization, if you ask me.

There is about even odds between our current "leaders" reaching a viable agreement before the deadline and Notre Dame winning their next game.

The current hired staff constructed the "poison pill" which they now hold in their hand opposite the glass of water. Little doubt that the lack of an approved budget in the past three years forebodes the likely result.

BlueStreak 12-02-2012 04:38 PM

F**k that quiz.

Maybe we should just pile a bunch of knives on a table in the well of congress and lock the doors. Last man/woman left standing gets to call the shots.

Bwahahha :D What did you score? I got 33% ish. On one or two of the questions I went against my gut feeling and lost. No way would I have scored near 100%.

Is that viable as in something that is acceptable to both sides and to the country in general, or viable enough to be able to stay in office? Viable to me means that I will pay more, the wealthy will pay more, the lower incomes will pay at least something, meaning elimination of EIC. Social Security will have to be streamlined and people that make over 109K will have to pay SS taxes on all income, not just the first 109K. SS will need to be revamped to a retirement supplement on a need basis. If you retire making as much or more than you made while working I see no need to have that supplemented by the government. This is just a bare start as to what needs to be done. Both parties have had their hands in this mess going back decades, and they are both going to have to quit blaming each other and get to figuring out how to fix it.

Grrr. Here is Carly Fiorina talking about what Obama has to give to Republicans so they can have a win/win.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/02/politi...html?hpt=hp_t1

Who in the fuck is she trying to kid? Republicans used to have the best ideas. Now she is a failed CEO begging for Obama to hand her party a win.

Fuck me gently with a chainsaw.

The Republicans lost when they lost the farmers and their logic.

Amazing, isn't it?

I saw an article earlier today....(I need to see if I can find it again..)...that said there is a group of CEOs preparing to head to DC and to tell some senate committee what needs to be done to "save America".................

Let me guess.........Cut "entitlements" for the poor and working class and give them the money, hundreds of billions worth, that'll fix everything.

Ummmmmmmm..........Blow me.

Dave

I wonder is she ever makes the connection in her mind that most of us see her as an outsourcer like Romney. That is why we did not elect her when she ran for the Senate.

Outsourcers see themselves as the good guys. They're protecting us from high costs by eliminating all the good jobs.

We're supposed to be thankful for that.

Exactly what is the Republican bid to resolve the pending fiscal issues? I haven't heard any more details from the Congressional Republicans than we heard from Romney about his tax plan. And do the really think that Obama is going to negotiate a deal to extricate us from the aftermath of the last debt-limit fiasco, only to face another one within a couple of months? He has put his solutions to the problem on the table. Last I heard, they did not have a proposal on the table.

They don't but you won't hear that on the corporate media, even from the supposedly "liberal" commentators. The entire discussion in the media is on Republican terms. It's all about Obama, whether he's being "arrogant" by starting from the position he ran on during the election, whether he's "serious" about finding a solution because he's on the road "campaigning" instead of sitting down with Boehner and McConnell to negotiate.

I think Obama's learned from what happened with the dialogue over "Obamacare." The right wing seized the initiative in creating a false narrative about Obama's march into soshulism. This time, he is taking the case to the public about what he wants and why he wants it. The Republicans are setting themselves up to be painted as whiners with no ideas. The more he identifies them as do-nothings, and they act consistent with that description, the more they set themselves up for a "shellacking" in 2014.

D-Ray

Does anyone not believe for a single minute that a deal will be struck. If not before the first of the year soon there after. Right now the GOP is adrift looking for a someone who all or a majority of the Right will follow. While on the other hand the Left looks to be now in a stronger position but that can change O so fast. Are they able to use it to an advantage while able to?

The Democrats not known for being able to stick together in a totally united front unlike the Republicans have in the past. I fear the Democrats will once again for the good of the country give a little more ground then needed to the Republicans to strike a deal in the 24th hour.

To much pressure to settle this and move on for it to last to long. But then again the Tea Party has a strangle hold on the House leadership at least until the new session's election of leadership positions is over.

Boehner offers up Dem Bowles stale pre election framework. What a bunch of crooks and bullshyte artistes these idjits are. I say drive it right off the cliff, full speed ahead. These machinations by the losers of the last election are nothing but cynicism wrapped in turds. Robert Reich has a good grip on this in his 8 point plan. Let the Bush tax cuts die and introduce a mid class tax break in the new congress. Let's see where they really stand. On to 2014!;)

Boreas 12-03-2012 04:41 PM

Quote:

The proposal calls for $800 billion in higher tax collections through an overhaul of the tax code next year that would push the top rate below the current level of 35 percent and raise cash by wiping out loopholes and deductions.

The plan also seeks $600 billion in health savings. One option, GOP aides said, would be raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67. It also includes $300 billion in savings from other mandatory programs, such as farm subsidies. And it would save $200 billion by applying a less generous measure of inflation government wide, including to Social Security benefits, which would rise more slowly as a result.
This is what they call a "credible plan"?
Quote:

The GOP plan also seeks another $300 billion in cuts to agency budgets on top of the $1 trillion in cuts already enacted. All told, it would produce $2.2 trillion in new savings, or $4.6 trillion when measured against the same yardstick as the president’s proposal.
Gosh! I wonder which departments those will be!

The GOP's leaders still haven't got the memo. The majority of the electorate want to raise taxes on incomes over 250K.

Have to agree but the democrats aren't as organized as the republicans and they can be spineless.

I don't belong to organized political party. I'm a democrat.
