I'm thinking that it's time out time for me.
Take it easy boys and girls. A little less eye gougin' and hair pulling is my recommendation. It's nice to have a debate but the behavior of late seems a bit more than I'm willing to stomach.
Yeah, I kick as hard as any and I apologize if I've hurt anyones feelings too deeply. Maybe you had it comin', maybe not. Who knows? I'll be back (as some nobody shithead actor from home state said) |
We all need one sooner or later. Have a nice break, when you decide to come back we'll be here. :)

Can't say as I blame you. The name calling, the refusal to accept the possibility of being wrong in a position, the refusal to even look at other viewpoints, etc. make the music thread the best one here at this moment. It's kind of sad really. There are a lot of highly intelligent and well spoken people here and the civil exchange of ideas is food for the brain. Right now it seems some are content with eating the same grilled cheese sandwich day after day after day.
I hope it gets better. |
I've been considering the same. Life's hard enough without coming here and making it worse.
Chas |
Fair winds and following seas, my friend. Stay in touch, I'm sure we'll bump into each other over at AK.

Take it easy man, and come back!

Now that spring is back in the picture and several months of work have come to an end...I like Bob will look to the positive aspects of the rest of the year. Heaven knows...it won't happen with political talk or any of the news channels.
There are sooo many positive things happening in my life right now. I shall concentrate on the blessings we have received this year. I wish all of you a healthy and fun filled summer. Tell someone today...that you love them. :) |
Somebody give me some ideas about how we can have a spirited debate but still remain civil? Should I actually engage in some moderation besides spam hunting?
Regards, D-Ray |
Heck if I know D, this place is extremely moderate compared to most. We're just plain nicer :D Sometimes it gets heated but they are hot topics.
Seems like a good time to thank you for your thankless work. Thanks. And thank you Painter for a wonderful post. Pete |

This is easily the tamest political chat room I have ever encountered. For anyone who disagrees, I can easily link you to some incredibly nasty places. Some of them so bad, they've been shut down by their owners, who gave up on trying to moderate. Then there are others are strictly discussion boards for one side or the other. Where all they do is tell each other how brilliant they are all day long. So, if what you seek is unhindered validation and a safe echo chamber......... Just my humble opinion. Dave |

One that comes to mind that I used to frequent was "Politics360", which no longer exists. (A search for that address now brings up some news site. Not the same thing.)
Politics360 somehow became co-opted by a bunch of prisoners. Aryan Brotherhood and Black Panther types. I'm sure you can imagine what THAT devolved into......... |
I think a lot of us have come here from AK, and are used to the atmosphere there. I agree that there are political sites that are much harsher than here. Shoot, some of the comments on news sites are pretty nasty. Nevertheless, we are certainly more rough and tumble here than over at AK.
I an inclined against imposing moderation, but would reconsider if there were an overwhelming consensus that it is needed. And Blue is right, it's highly unlikely that there would not be at least some perceived bias. As I've said before, free speech should be the rule of the day on a political site. Those committed to trollish behavior generally end up losing out in the marketplace of ideas. Regards, D-Ray |

Dave I bet that was a hoot!
D if you moderate you'll make Lenin look like Ghengis Khan in less than 24 hours! lol. But whoa I bet it would be made that way. Pete |

Good to here that blessings have come your way, well deserved I'm sure. You and yours have a healthy happy summer. |
Don I don't think we need moderation, Finn pretty well nailed the problem and my simple approach to people like that is simply to ignore them. Much as I try to be a reasonable christian I never ever could take Paul's admonition to suffer fools gladly (wonder it he meant Gladly the cross-eyed bear?)
|
I think self moderation is the only way to go.
(Thanks for the work you do Don.) |

'ey now! Don' be taking me too serious, you know:D I would be ashamed if I started some mini exodus from the boards here. My frustration involves more my physical impediments rather than some twit trying to score a wacked O'keefeian point at my expense. Even twits can grow up (I speak from personal experience). To reiterate what has already been mentioned D Ray, please don't wield the mallet of moderation here. I think it would do far more harm than good. I happen to enjoy pissin' off the likes of Mezz. Maybe he'll get it, maybe he won't but that will be his decision. Trolls are like little worms- some metamorphisize into something better, some you just impale on a Gamakatsu and toss 'em into the lake. Bubba's just gone fishin' for a day or two. Charlie come on out to Californie and I'll show you what real fishin' is. No bucket mouth ever gets you goin' like a 30-40lb. Yellowtail headed for the rocks with all of your 40 lb line. (We use live squid for bait, Dave!:D)Heh,heh. |

I imagine!
I know a guy who's against interracial marriages. And he's from WV. What a stereotype? But, he's the nicest guy, and has helped kids from all backgrounds including putting them up in his home on a regular basis. If you ask, he'll tell you that in middle school his best friend was interracial. And killed himself because he didn't fit in. You can see the pain still. So, he's against it because he doesn't want to see kids in that place. Pete |
Eventually, I think such things will fade. But, it's rough on the first few generations, unfortunately.

Thought about going out on the Missouri, lot's of people regularly pull in 70-80 lb cats, but my boat is more of a lake boat instead of a river boat. You can't just step into it like a jon, but you can tear it up landing it on the rocks in the current. Besides, we've got those "flying carps", and I would be mighty pissed off it one of them took my windshield out. Kind of sad, really. We used to go out on the Missouri, 15 miles away, set up camp on a sand bar, get drunker than Cooter Brown, cook steaks of a driftwood fire, etc. Also where I realized that I could hit a buoy at 300 yds with a Ruger Single Six .22 about half of the time. Of course, I could still SEE at the time. May have not taken down a wounded elk with a .44 at 600 yds like Elmer Keith...but I ain't Elmer Keith. And I believe him. That old fucker didn't have to lie, most people didn't even believe the truth. Take care, Chas |
Chas, I read Elmer's book about 15 years ago and it was a good read.
Just thought I would drop by and spam you boys but I got no spam. So judging from this, the first thread I read, you all must be still ganging up on the conservative members? |
I'm more of a Jack O'Connor guy myself when it comes to high-powered rifles. That said, I mostly shoot blackpowder nowadays.

And after shooting a snapping turtle from atop the Rockhouse Bridge with a .45-70 with a 600 gr cast lead slug, with a max charge of 3031 in a modified Swiss T-bolt, Elmer has a point. It's like being hit with a Mack truck. But I tend to go with O' Connor more. Hot, fast, and flat has certain advantages. But I shoot a .25-06 and a .243. Kinda like my .17 HMR too. Even looking through 12X glass you can be your own spotter. Chas |
