Up here in NY we already mowed!

Can you believe it?

BlueStreak 03-31-2012 02:03 PM

My grass is a foot deep. I mowed it before the surgery. I was planning to do it today, but it's raining.......(And, I'm not supposed to be doing that yet.)

Dave

merrylander 03-31-2012 02:34 PM

Wasn't quite a foot deep but the first job was to pick up all the winter downed branches, that took most of a day. Then it rained, in fact it was/is supposed to rain here today. I hope so because I threw out some grass seed.

Charles 03-31-2012 05:53 PM

If I had the money, I'd cut down every damn tree on my property and then cover the lawn with concrete.

Hubby mowed last week. We had snow yesterday (2--3") and temps that varied from 25--37 degrees.
Local farmers are concerned for the apple trees that were weeks ahead of production. Not to mention grape vines. And so it goes....

A friend of mine covered his entire yard with rocks. Big ones. Sprayed the yard with Round Up and laid weedblock over it first, then sand, pea gravel, then the rocks.

I used to think he was nuts.

But, he doesn't even own a lawnmower........

When I was about 12, my dad put me in the lawn mowing business. Had to push that damned old 22" Briggs with a deck that was built like a '57 Buick all over town. Then I hit a water meter cover and he made me buy him a new mower.

Worked my ass off all summer and he wound up with a new mower while I wound up with around 20 bucks.

I've been sour on lawn mowing every since.

I didn't hate trees until I dropped around 10K cutting the bastards down, and there are more to go. Actually, it was the "Fence Row War" I became engaged in with one of my neighbors. But I don't want to say too much about it because the statutes of limitations may have not run out yet. Last time I really lost my temper.

One thing about it, they no longer fuck with me.

And Noon, in case you're wondering, I didn't use a gun.

Good to see you understand that it's just not necessary. ;)

He should have just put down DDT, he may have grown an extra arm but nothing would grow there.

And that's the danger. Crops produce too early then another frost comes along and destroys it.

I do like the fact that my Jasmine has started blooming already. It's a wonderful thing to be greeted with as I step onto the porch every day. Last night I went for a walk and caught the fragrance of wild Wisteria in bloom....Magnificent!

I have Chinese White Wisteria, it won't bloom until early May at least, but it's fragrance is out of this world.

Then in July/August my Gardenia and Ligustrum starts flowering............:)

Today if weather permits I will unwrap the 28 Norway Spruce we planted over tha last two years. I have to wrap them with plastic fencing come October else the white tail lawn rats will destroy them with their horns. They should be big enough in a couple of years that wrapping should no longer be necessary.

Thanks, I hope that I might get a shot or two wih the 6mm pellet pistol. that ought to convince them that this is not a hospitable place.

I waited to mow mine but still have to do it three times so far this year.

On the deer problem, I have failed to figure out how to keep them out of my garden. At least they don't eat the Asparagus.

I understand the latest nuisance is feral hogs. We don't have them around here yet, but in southern Missouri I believe the MDC will let you shoot them on sight. Actually, I think they WANT you to shoot them on sight, no season, and no hunting permit required.

If the MDC doesn't even want to regulate them or make a buck off of them, they must be bad news.

Planted patches at the last two homes I've lived at. Simple to do just will take at least a couple of years to really get going. Nothing like a meal with some fresh cut then breading them up and frying like you would onion rings.

Never had them that way. I'll have to try it.

The smaller ones do the best. I use the same method for them as for onion rings. They are sweeter tasting, once you try them you will be hooked.

No mowing here...though the pool does require constant care. Kinda like having a lawn but it does beat pushing a mower. My mower's been disassemble and the weed eater just hanging for 3 years now!

BlueStreak 04-01-2012 10:38 AM

Hooked?

Barneys an asparagus pusher.

"Hey man, check it out. (Scans around, up and down the street, checking for cops, then opens jacket.) I got the best stalks in town. This shit is sweet. Put some breading on it. Heaven. You won't want to come down. You won't mess with beans or lettuce anymore. Corn? Forget about it. You'll be right back here, asking for your man Barney....."

DDT would kill the bugs. 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T mixed half and half gives you Agent Orange. It kills everything including people.

Plant Marigolds around the garden as a border, keeps out rabbits as well.

With this guy I just aim it, everything is hydraulic, sterring, deck and transmission

How long does it take to mow your property with that rig?

I'm guessing about 3 hrs.

I would need full cover headphones, that Koehler Magnum, is not exactly quiet.

Close, on a good day I can do it just over 2-1/2 but generally it is closer to 3. The deck is 60" wide.

I used a Sony Walkman and some headphones to mow my five acre lawn when I lived on the farm. The mower was an eleven horse John Deere with a Kohler cast iron engine. Then I got smart and mowed most of it with an International Harvester 45 HP diesel tractor with an 8' Bush Hog.

I had to use an old manual reel mower for years. I didn't get a power mower till I was 16, and I had to pay for 1/2 of it. Builds character, he says.

I love trees and am attempting to make my backyard a 'real' woods, grass need not apply. But when I cut a big tree down a few years back (too close to the house) it landed on the house, 10K in damages. Not good for the old self confidence I assure you.

No gun? You're slipping Chas :)

I noticed Saturday the Silver Maples are leafing. Leaves, at the end of March, in Cleveland. I understand someone saw a flying feral pig over the Rock Hall.

I actually saw one of those reel mowers for sale at Loweballs...even had a catcher which would hold maybe a 5 gallon bucket of clippings.

What a joke.

I remember the old ones, of course they were all rusted up and dull as well.

It's a fucking wonder my Dad didn't force me to use one of those pieces of shit whenever he determined to make me a "lawn pro".

Guess he didn't want to deal with the phone calls from people bitching about their lawns not being mowed.

Did I ever mention that I hate mowing the yard? I just finished. Cutting a 22" swath on our corner lot provides a fair amount of exercise.

He is an update, teh crops are coming out of the ground already up here in NY!

Never in my lifetime have I ever seen the fields green up here the first week of April! Seems to me an industrious farmer might get a 5th harvest of Spinach this year or a third of lettuce.

I doubt that has ever been done before.
