"E-wave" project-Done at last.

Feel privileged, you losers are the first to get a peak at the long awaited unveiling.

Two months in the making and a hundred or so over budget, But, still less than $500 for the pair, my "econowave" project is finally finished.

There is still a little tweaking to do. It sounds like they need a little more internal damping and bracing, but otherwise the sound is beyond expectations.

I'm not allowed to do any heavy lifting, so, I had to fit everything up in the garage, break it down into sub-assemblies, then reassemble in the living room.

So, what do you guys think of my workmanship? The tweeter baffles appear out of square, but their really not. It's an optical illusion caused by the grain of the wood. (African Mahogany).

More pics.....

The Altec drivers I had on hand and had to use the Selenium adapters. So, once finances permit, I might buy the recommended Selenium driver. Or maybe not, those old Alnico drivers do have a sweet, abeit somewhat rolled off, sound. We shall see.

bobabode 03-27-2012 09:21 PM

Those look excellent! What's the LF driver?

BlueStreak 03-27-2012 09:29 PM

Dayton PA380 15". Not a bad woofer for $80. China, of course.:(, But even many of the more expensive ones were made there too. Unless I wanted to blow $1k on JBLs. But, that's WAY over budget. The Eminence woofers are mostly made in the USA, but, none had the specs to fit this box......

Very nice, Dave!

I'd like to hear them and the pad looks cool as well. I just recently sold off most of my E-Wave rig.

How do you like them?

epifanatic 03-27-2012 10:44 PM

Outstanding, I'd love to hear them. Great work!

BlueStreak 03-27-2012 11:06 PM

Thanks!

If you guys weren't so flippin' far away, I'd have y'all over in a heartbeat. I only know of two AK guys in my immediate area, and they are always "too busy".

Those look great! Now be careful moving them around in your present condition. How do you like them compared to the Vandys?

merrylander 03-28-2012 07:19 AM

Excellent Dave.

If they sound as good as they look you're in great shape!

BlueStreak 03-28-2012 11:39 AM

I'm breaking them in good. Watching the meters, these things shake the house with as little as 2 watts!

The bass was a bit sloppy and boomy at first. But, as the woofers break in, it's tightening up. I also had the phase on the woofers backwards, corrected that as well. I will be getting the Selenium drivers, eventually. The old Altecs have their virtues, but the highs start rolling off at about 10k hz. I know this because the amp has a 10k EQ on it, and without it up just about all of the way, I don't get much "sparkle" in the upper frequencies. With the L-Pad turned up too high, I get too much "shout" in the upper midrange.

Really, the x-overs were designed for the Seleniums anyways.

Very nice! :)
I need to do some reading on those things. Those bass cabs sure look like my "tent sale" 3115's. With real paint on them of course. :p

Carl

Oerets 03-28-2012 01:00 PM

Sharp speakers, bet they sound as good as they look too!

Be careful moving them they look heavy.:D

They might be the same thing....They're the trapeziod knockdowns from Partsexpress. The "paint" is actually Gloss Black Polyurethane.

I fit everything up in the garage. Then broke them down into sub assemblies. Reassembled in the living room. A lot easier and lighter to carry that way.

I haven't spiked them, so there easy to slide on the carpet.

Believe me, I'm not about to risk reinjuring myself.

Thanks for the concern, Barney.

Wow, the JBL paper is still online.

Mine are very sloppily applied flat black.

Carl

BlueStreak 03-28-2012 01:49 PM

No, not the same. Those are three ways?

Dave

CarlV 03-28-2012 02:03 PM

Yep, 3 way. A second much closer look, same but different lol.

Those are real purdy Dave, nice work.

Do you need threaded 1" Seleniums for those waveguides? I have a pair of D220Ti's (never used) that I picked up on Ebay a while back. They were supposed to be bolt on but the seller error-ed and shipped me threaded. I never barked about it because they also error-ed on the listing and were selling pairs for the price of a single driver. They changed the listing shortly after I paid for mine.

Not sure if they will best the Altec's but who knows.

If I keep them I will probably never use them. Conversely, if I let them go, I will more than likely find a need for them within days after shipping. Seeing as how the end result is really the same...

They turned out nice by the way.

I posted this yesterday but clicked on the wrong thread when I did it.

Very nice cabinet work. I bet they sound great. Hard to know how close I am to you if I don't know what swamp you live in. :D

Thanks. And I would have been glad to pay you what you paid. Then I'd have fiddy more in the bank. Oh well, it's all in the timing. And I'm usually one off.

I love the drive through the Dismal Swamp. My family has a beach house on Rehoboth beach. Maybe it is time for a road trip.
