Latest Rasmussen Poll - Obama trails Romney or Santorum

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/publ..._tracking_poll

"Today's numbers show Romney at 48%, Obama at 43%. That’s Romney’s largest lead since December."

"If Santorum is the Republican nominee, he is up by one point over the president, 46% to 45%."

"Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's job performance. Fifty-four percent (54%) at least somewhat disapprove."

Our friends on the left in this forum continue to characterize the Repub candidates as "weak", along with a host of other pejoratives. If an incumbent president can't create some positive space against such a "weak" opposition, what does that say about candidate Obama in 2012?

Of course.

I quote the late Glenn Brenner, a former sportscaster on local DC newscast that was as hilarious as he was knowledgeable. He was editorializing about the efficacy of college football rankings, and deadpanned the following words.

Quote:

I only polls (sic) I trust are Bobby Vinton and the pope.

Charles 03-10-2012 03:25 PM

Wouldn't a Newsweek poll sampling all adults over the age of 18 and residing in the DC metro area be more reliable?

Let's not forget 2010.

Rasmussen skews right, so I think it must be taken with the body of contemporary polls for a clearer picture. That said, a clearer picture right now means don't mean squat. There's only one poll that will ultimately count. It's a polarized nation and each of the two major party candidates can count on 45% in the general election. The trick is getting the next 6%.

It's Rassmussen. Probably one of the better rightwing pollsters, but a rightwing pollster none-the-less.

Bias, DJ, bias.

I wasn't ripping you. The polls are up & down like the stock market. I'm pretty sure the lead will change several times before election day.
These polsters have become very good at their craft.
Having said that, I'm all polled out.

Always thought that Rassmussen was one of the more accurate polls due to their internals.

Not that it much matters at this point in the current election cycle. November is a LONG way off.

Hence my comment, "....one of the better...".

I believe I started a thread a few years back expounding on my distaste for polls. I still hate them.

Have you ever noticed that no one you know is even discussing a topic until after a poll is released telling them what their opinion is?

"This here poll says 91% of Americans think it's okay to put out a hair fire with gasoline. Well, if THAT many Americans believe it, it must be true....I'll have to remember that, just in case ma hair lights up.........."

It is a crafty art, tell me what results you want and I will write the questions to guarantee those results.:p

True, but it is also in the interest of the pollster to be as accurate as possible. One can check accuracy, at least in some polls, by checking the correlation between the poll and the actual result of the event presumed to be measured by the poll. AFAIK, the poll questions and methodology are available for perusal. There is enough randomness between pollsters to account for different results without the attribution of misleading intent.

The question is do the poll results affect the eventual outcome?

Probably, however, much less than some people think. There are so many different polls that I'd argue that one is offset by another. Band wagon and underdog effects are likely small in national elections, but I'd suspect become more relevant at the local level where the likelihood of opposing polls is less.

If that is good news for you, enjoy! :)

d-ray657 03-12-2012 07:08 PM

Polling results are fluid. What went down can go up. Like Obama's lead over Romney.

What you have to remember though, is the dems are sitting with a billion in campaign funds just waiting to see who wins the republican nomination. With all of the republican fodder that has been happening over the last several months, when the flood gates open, oh boy..... :D

And I will laugh at the ignorance that would nominate such a closeted troglodyte knowing full well the result. :D

Obama would eviscerate 2/3 of the Republican triad (discounting Ron Paul as irrelevant) in any debate and the one smart guy carries a two ton bag of skeletons.

There are those who criticize Obama as a President. That's fine.

I don't know anyone who sells his campaign skills short...

If Obama is smart, and he is, he's had his people following those clowns around, picking up their trash and saving it. So he can dump it on their heads when the time comes.

Really, it's still several months out, things could change but it will be interesting nonetheless.
