Canada moves away from gun control

Some years ago, a registry was put into place to have records of all Canadian long gun owners and their weapons. Today the Conservative government was getting rid of the registry and destroying all the existing records. As you can imagine, the pinkos are not happy about this.

Other weapons permits, etc stay in place.

They keep making it more and more attractive to the scurge to the south

Good news, in my opinion.

Really, if you are a peaceful law abiding owner what is wrong with registering, you put a license on your car and it can be a deadly weapon.

I wonder what this means to Americans travelling north to hunt? When this law went into effect, lots of Americans weren't willing to go through the registration and pay the fee ($75?) to bring their hunting rifle across the border (count me as one of these). I think Canada lost a lot of hunting/tourist revenue as a result.

The quintessential leftist view. The government (in the US) has no right to know how many legal guns a legal gun owners has. Study how they did it in GB. They didn't just come out one day and say ok boys, give the guns over, and hunting shotguns too. They do it in little pieces. A freedom here, in the name of safety, a right there, just because honest folks shouldn't care if they have nothing to hide. Things are not always what they appear to be on their face, especially where governments are involved. Just my 2 cents on gun control.

merrylander 10-27-2011 08:47 AM

There was a time in Britain where the police never carried guns and neither did the crooks. Simply because if you were caught with a weapon while committing a crime you did major time in the slammer. Which is exactly how it should be, especially as it seems the police are not disciplined enough to have weapons. There was a case in Baltimore where the police shot an off duty policeman - they fired forty shots!

Don't you yanks have both the highest gun ownership and the highest murder rate too?

No.

The quintessential leftist view is that nobody should HAVE guns.

Actually demanding a level of accountability for their ownership or use strikes me as a Realist viewpoint.

It's been against the law to go around shooting people without a damn good reason every since the Earth cooled. Even then you're most likely to go to court and drop a pocket full of change during the process.

When you look at the amount of legally possessed firearms there are in America, and how few people are killed with LEGALLY possessed arms...it makes a strong case for the accountability which most people hold themselves to.

Which, of course, only leaves the ones who don't.

Possibly yes to your first query, no to the second.

But I'm from Bugtussell, and we still don't consider ourselves Yanks.

How did Mark Twain put it, "I was placed here to serve others, why the others were placed here I do not have a clue."...or something to that effect.

Chas

I see your point.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. In what they used to call the first world. US and Canada, non-east block Europe, Japan, Australia, you have the highest murder rate.

And anyone living between the Canadian and Mexican borders is a Yank. :)

My English great uncle calls me a Yank. I call him a Limey.

I remember the first time a southerner called me a Yankee. I said, but I'm not from New York!
