Jimmy Kimmel on Involuntary "Hiatus"
It's getting dark out there, guys.
|
Yet a vote on censuring Ilhan Omar (a whackjob imo) failed in the House today by just one vote. Perhaps this is less about politics than setting a precedent by the Republicans.

Getting tired of hearing ""WE TOLD YOU SO""? People who inform others of your actions.
Removing their voices works to stop this! Still is there you know. |
I guess "cancel culture" works for everyone
|
What I commonly see as 'cancel culture' is people not buying products (which can be a wide variety of things) from people/companies they disagree with.
Having a show taken off the air because the FCC chair (who worked on Trump's campaign, BTW) didn't like what somebody said is something entirely different. Starts with an 'F'. How long before Grumpy gets a call from somebody in this administration saying they don't like some of the comments on this forum? It could happen. |
Well it appears free speech is not dead.
As long as you stay on the same page or message that is! |
I'm not worried, though. I hear Chuck Schumer is going to write a strong letter.

Cancel culture is cultural. Authoritarian censorship from the top of the government is a ton more dangerous. Government can come down a lot harder and faster, on a lot more people. With governmental authority and power, you can fill camps (that's one model) or you can do violent cultural revolution everywhere at once (a complementary model, the Red Guards had camps too).

The use of power is also cultural.

Disney lost 3.8 billion dollars in just a few days.
Money still talks. |

Day after his criticism of Kirk after his demise, it seems Disney brass reviewed Kimmel's monologue for the following night, and they did not like it but Kimmel would not back down. So they cancelled his show and now remains to be seen what he will say when he is back on the air.
My gut feel says Disney is now in a position of weakness and will not be able to effectively gag Kimmel. OTOH, Sinclair and Nexstar who own a number of ABC affiliates may keep him off the air. Now Igor is going to get it from both sides, not that I care. They can jack up prices for their cruises and theme parks which is what brings in most of their revenue. |
In my opinion, the FCC guy's comment was a cowardly bully tactic. If lying about Kirk's killer on air meets the threshold for FCC action, then officially take that action. Don't drop a vague threat while being interviewed on a podcast.

Sinclair folded today. Hopefully Nexstar will follow.
